After devouring his latest child in an attempt to avoid Cronus', his father's fate, Zeus, the head deity of the Greek pantheon sat back, content that none of his spawn would usurp his throne. Soon after, his head began to ache, but the mighty Zeus couldn't be bothered by this slight annoyance.

Over the course of the next week, however, that slight annoyance grew into an insurmountable pain. In an effort to relieve his pain, Zeus called upon the smith of the gods, Hephaestus to crack open his head with his mighty hammer to divine the cause of the God of Thunder's misery. Hephaestus raised the hammer high above his head, and brought it down with great strength, splitting Zeus' skull.

From his now fragmented skull sprung the members of At Large, fully grown with their respective instruments. The ensuing surge of punk rock collapsed Mount Olympus under the weight of the music's fury. Now, At Large wanders the land, making ears bleed and Republicans cry.

In all actuality, At Large is a punk rock band based out of Wytheville, Virginia that formed in February of 2006. Since then, At Large has been writing songs and playing small, local shows all over the region.

When the guys of At Large describe themselves as punk, they actually mean it. While some of their songs do have a noticeably pop-punk feel, it’s easy to see the punk ideals shine through. Of course, At Large doesn’t mind dabbling in different forms of punk, which is actually one reason they name At Large was chosen. Determined not to nail themselves down to a single style of music, At Large plays exactly what they want to play.

Songs like “The Ballad of FatAss Jones” and “No Profanity Song” show the lighter side of At Large, the fun-loving, beer-drinking, sunny-side-of-life half that doesn’t care what others think. Other songs, such as “History Repeats” and “American Atrophy” show the darker side of the world and show that, while the guys know how to have a good time, they know that social issues affect each and every person and deserve equal tenet.

However, serious or flippant the song material is, At Large isn’t in the business of making music for money, fame or women. At Large makes music because it’s fun for them to do so. Evidence of this can be seen at their live show since talking, telling jokes and taking off their clothes are as much a staple of an At Large show as the music they play.

The guys of At Large also have a very strong DIY ethic, even going as far as to create a home-grown label to host their and other local band’s music. Their first demo, “Shitty Recording” was self recorded and self produced in guitarist Nathan Robert’s bedroom and distributed by hand at local shows.

The band’s first full length, “Free Candy” is set to come out in late February/early March 2007.
