Athan Maroulis has performed everything from Industrial, Goth, and alternative rock to vocal jazz and traditional pre-rock pop. Maroulis is best-known as the lead singer of the Industrial/Darkwave band SPAHN RANCH, but he proved to be equally convincing as a '40s-style crooner when he started singing lead for a standards-oriented vocal jazz/traditional pop outfit known as THE BLUE DAHLIA.

In 1984, Maroulis became the lead singer for the Goth tinged band FAHRENHEIT 451 who built a cult following from New York City to Philadelphia with opening slots for the likes of Specimen, The Ramones and Gene Loves Jezebel. FAHRENHEIT 451 released The House of Morals (LP) in 1986 and parted ways in 1987.

Maroulis then moved to Philadelphia, where he sang lead for the industrial outfit EXECUTIVE SLACKS from 1987 to 1991. This was followed by the Industrial Metal combo TUBALCAIN that released 25 Assorted Needles (CD) in 1992 on Verdugo/Cleopatra Records and Left (CD) in 1994. While still a member of the Philly based TUBALCAIN, Maroulis relocated to Los Angeles in late 1992 and soon joined SPAHN RANCH with Matt Green and Rob Morton.

At first, Spahn Ranch had an abrasive industrial sound that later morphed into a more melodic-electronic darkwave combo. From 1993 to 2000, SPAHN RANCH would go on to complete more than a dozen tours of North America and two of Europe, release 5 albums, 4 EPs for Cleopatra Records and Zoth Ommog, Out of Line and Cryonica in Europe.

In 1995, Maroulis began working for the Cleopatra Label Group there he would eventually work his way up to handling A&R while also running the imprint label Stardust Records where he wrote liner notes and reissued releases from Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Orson Welles and many others. In 1999 Maroulis recorded the first of two subsequent releases with THE BLUE DAHLIA, a straight up jazz standards act that also featured Skip Heller and DJ Bonebrake.

In late 2000 Maroulis elected to leave Los Angeles and return to his native Brooklyn, New York. There he worked for Metropolis Records for a few years and continued to use his knowledge of early and mid 20th Century music to write liner notes and compile CDs by artists like Les Paul, Ike & Tina Turner, Lightnin' Hopkins and many others for a variety of labels as well as his own short lived label Sepiatone Records.

From 2001 to 2008 Maroulis recorded limited material highlighted by an appearance on BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL'S 2002 release The Scavenger Bride, RAZED IN BLACK'S Damaged in 2003 and on the debut album of his brother the Tony nominated American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis in 2007. In 2009 Maroulis cut his first full length album since 2000 when he officially joined BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL. Consisting of bandleader Sam Rosenthal and Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione, BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL will release 10 Neurotics September 22nd. Also look out for GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! The Best of Burlesque & Striptease Music, a CD of 1950's strip anthems that was produced by Maroulis that will be released in late '09 by The Great American Music Company.
