Distinguishing Anton Bass’ musical specialty is like trying to define the dominant hue of a rainbow: songwriter, producer, musician, DJ, remixer, even the head of A&R for indie label Sea To Sun Recordings. How about if he’s just ID’d as a master of his own musical mural.

Bass began his career in the early 1990s playing in rock bands, after studying jazz at Five Towns College in Long Island, N.Y. With an Associates Degree in Jazz/ Commercial Music in pocket, he performed four and five nights a week in various popular tri-state-area bands.

But with an open mind to other genres, Bass soon found himself attracted to New York’s underground dance music scene in the mid ‘90s. In 1996, while on the dance-floor of the metropolis’ famed Tunnel nightclub, Bass had an epiphany, as storied electronic/dance DJ Junior Vasquez worked the turntables.

He recalls, “Ironically, it was Junior who created my first professional break in late 1999 as a producer, spinning a record I produced with my partner at the time, Konrad Carelli. Together we were a production team known as Karmadelic.” That song, “Nothingness,” hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Club Play chart, followed by “Check It Out,” which reached 2. Both songs featured vocals from Sandy B (who scored No. 1 dance hits “Make the World Go Round” and “Ain’t No Need To Hide” in the mid-1990s). A cover of Journey’s “Who’s Crying Now” followed and ultimately, an album release on Jellybean Recordings, “Flip Your Mind.”

By 2004, Bass had propelled to the pinnacle of the remix realm, producing Karmadelic remixes for artists such as Luther Vandross, Ace of Base, and Isaac Hayes, and scoring a string of collaborations with popular mixshow DJ Johhny Budz, including rerubs for Ciara, Kim Sozzi, Goldfrapp and INXS. He also wrote and produced a song for the solo debut for Ashley Tisdale (of “High School Musical” fame), “Who I Am.”

In 2007, Bass aligned with DJ/producers Anthony Fonseca and DJ Sted E to form production trio Speakerbox. Their first single “Time,” featuring Michelle Shaprow, reached No. 5 on the Billboard Club Play chart and top 20 on the Billboard Dance Radio chart and earned an International Dance Music Award nomination in the Best Pop-Dance category. It was also licensed as theme song for the Bravo TV show “Fashionably Late.” Speakerbox then went on to release collaborations with Crystal Waters (“Dancefloor”), and Freedom Williams (“Mindbounce”)

In June 2008, Bass took an entrepreneurial step by joining forces with global dance artist Sylvia Tosun—taking on management of her independent label Sea to Sun Recordings. In less than a year, the imprint has scored two top 10 Billboard Club records and five charting releases in total. Four releases have hit the top 10 on the UK’s influential Music Week Upfront Club Chart and two have reached 1 on the DMC World Charts. The label is also working with a growing roster of acts, including Speakerbox, Freedom Williams, Sted-E & Hybrid Heights, 3BE feat. Kelly Barnes, and Loverush UK.
