"Respect That" - Track Of The Day on New Music Canada

So I’m at Warden Woods with my grandmother watching Beat Street and I see some crazy stuff people are doing on cardboard boxes so when I get home I’m flattening the cardbox that the air conditioner came in and I put "breakdance" in bubble letters with crayola markers. Y’know, the kind that smells fruity. Like Red is cherry and purple is grape. Anyways, I’m trying to moonwalk and backspin to Rockit and Pop Goes My Love from this Breakdance compilation but I never quite got the hang of the windmill. It wasn’t on the instructional poster that came with the tape.

So I’m watching TV, y’know flipping through channels, when I get to this local station airing a DMC competition that went down in Kitchener or Waterloo or something. That’s the first time I saw DJ’s competing with routines. Guys like DJ X, Tyson, even Nick Holder was in this thing. Y’know, the house guy? He was in this DMC. Anyways, I think this dude, Jam On Strong won that year. It was probably him using the tricycle to scratch or something that put him over the top. But dude had cuts and was fast. So it wasn’t soon after that I tried scratching records on this radio shack stereo system. The only records I had were a Kool Moe Dee album, the one with go see the doctor, and Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince’s rock the house. I really messed those records up cuz the record platter was only big enough to hold 7" records so when you scratched LP’s the edge of the platter would grind down on theh grooves and really mess it up. Fortunately my grandmother bought me 1200’s soon after that to keep me out of trouble. But Dumb Dick was never the same.
