Annie Kerr

I am a violinist, composer and improviser. I also play piano and viola and am interested in exploring different soundworlds in whatever music I am playing. I am classically trained, but began improvising as a child. This mix has always fueled my playing and composing. It is also the inspiration behind the teaching sessions I offer and the workshops that I occasionally organize. I have worked with many musicians playing music of different genres both as a band member and as a session player here in Brighton and in London. Some of these musicians are featured in my friend space. This has included playing in string sections for for bands, orchestras, folk rock bands, string quartets, singer songwriter duos, in a barn dance band, in improv groups and in lots of situations from Christenings and memorial services to busking on street corners, exhibition openings and studio work.

CURRENT PROJECTS - I am currently working on my solo material and on building interesting sets that combine composed and improvised elements. This has lately included music and spoken word/poetry. I play in a duo with guitarist Dave Allen and in a trio with double bass player Gus Garside and keyboards/percussionist Monty Oxymoron. Gus, Monty and I also play in a quartet with improvising drummer Paul May. I am a member of Brighton's Safehouse Collective which is a platform for exploring free improvisation and experimental music.
