André Fernandes was born in Lisbon, Portugal.
He studied at the Lisbon Hot Club School and later at Berklee College of Music from 96 to 98 where he was awarded the Stephen Holland Award for Outstanding Musicianship.
He is now an extremely active guitar player collaborating with musicians like Lee Konitz, Mário Laginha, Chris Cheek, Maria Joao, Cyro Baptista, Ohad Talmor, John Hollenbeck and Theo Bleckman, Dan Weiss, Pete Rende, Bill McHenry, Jochen Rueckert, Perico Sambeat, Tomasz Stanko, Julian Arguelles, David Binney, AviShai Cohen, Eli Degibri, Pedro Moreira, Alexi Tuomarila, Bernardo Moreira, Jorge Reis, Carlos Barreto, Akiko Pavolka, Jarmo Savolainen, Phil Markowitz and João Paulo Esteves da Silva, amongst many others.
He regularly plays the major concert halls and Jazz Festivals in Europe and toured extensively as a member of the Lee Konitz New Nonet, Maria Joaos group and other bands.
In 2002 he co-founded the Tone of a Pitch label and studios, for whom he has 4 albums released as a leader. All of them very well received by the press, his work "Cubo" was voted best jazz album of 2007 by Portugals critics poll, and the same year Fernandes was elected musician of the year by the prestigious publication "Público".
Records with numerous musicians including the OJM Orquestra with Lee Konitz, directed by Ohad Talmor, having played with them at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in NY celebrating Lee Konitzs 80th birthday in 2007.
Was a member of the Lee Konitz New Nonet for 2 years, and currently plays in numerous bands, as well as his own projects. His bands included musicians like Mário Laginha, Nelson Cascais, Alex Frazão, Matt Renzi, Jordi Rossy, Matt Pavolka, Pete Rende, Bernardo Sassetti, DjRide, and many others.

André Fernandes nasceu em Lisboa.
Completou os seus estudos na Escola de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal e em 1996 recebeu uma bolsa da conceituada Berklee College of Music, em Boston, EUA, que frequentou até se mudar para Nova Iorque.
Recebeu o Stephen Holland Award for Outstanding Musicianship.
Entre as suas colaborações destacam-se Mário Laginha, Tomasz Stanko, Lee Konitz, Chris Cheek, Cyro Baptista, Perico Sambeat, Maria Joao, David Binney, Julian Arguelles, Eli Degibri, Bill McHenry, Pedro Moreira, Pete Rende, John Hollenbeck e Theo Bleckman, Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, Bernardo Moreira, Jorge Reis, Carlos Barreto, Akiko Pavolka, Jarmo Savolainen, Furio diCastri , Phil Markowitz e João Paulo Esteves da Silva, entre outros.
Toca regularmente nos principais Festivais e salas europeias como membro do Lee Konitz New Nonet, Maria Joao e outros grupos.
Em 2001 gravou o seu primeiro CD como líder intitulado “O Osso”, editado pela sua própria editora Tone of a Pitch, ao qual se seguiram até hoje mais quatro trabalhos: "Howler", "Timbuktu", "Cubo", "Imaginário" e "Amplitude" com os grupo Spill.
Todos muito bem recebidos pela crítica e público, "Cubo" foi eleito disco do ano pela votação dos críticos no espaço Jazzlogical.net, e Fernandes eleito músico do ano de 2007 pelo jornal "Público".
Com o seu quarteto esgotou salas como a Casa da Música e a Culturgest.
Colabora regularmente com a Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos com quem grava o projecto "Portology" com Lee Konitz, dirigido por Ohad Talmor, e é convidado para integrar o Lee Konitz New Nonet na Europa em 2006 e 2007. Com Konitz e OJM actua no Carnegie Hall em Nova Iorque em celebração do seu octagésimo aniversário e com o seu noneto actua por toda a Europa.
Os seus projectos incluem musicos como Mário Laginha, Jordi Rossy, Pete Rende, Matt Renzi, Nelson Cascais, Alex Frazão, DJRide e outros.
