I've been experimenting with digital sound editing for close to a decade. In the beginning, all I had was a Casio CZ-101, a cheap computer microphone and a one track mixing program called Goldwave. The tools I now use include a PC loaded with softsynths and media editing software, a Korg M1 synth, a Korg ES-1 drum machine and of course my imagination.
