Biography

Amanda Gordon –Singer/Songwriter

South London native Amanda Gordon (born Cleo Amanda Gordon Feb. 26 1988) is one of four siblings. Getting into the professional side of music two years ago, at the age of 17, was an unsurprisingly hard but long-awaited transition for Amanda. Music runs in her family; her mother loved to sing, her cousin is reggae legend Admiral Bailey, her brother writes and raps and she has relatives who are musicians and have vocal talent so music, as she describes, “infected my soul.” The young rising star grew up in London until she was 16 when she moved to California with her mother.

With the single “Daddy’s Little Girl,” Gordon reveals a part of her real life to the public while staging her writing talents in the heart-felt song. “This song is one I hold close to my heart. It has a sad feel to it but without being depressing, and you can definitely sing along with it.” The song portrays the story of a young girl who’s father is often absent and desperately wanted by his estranged daughter. “I know that many women and girls can relate to the words because it’s so real.” Gordon dropped the bomb of a single on the most appropriate day of the year: Father’s Day 2007.

There was always a deep passion for singing in her heart but she admits she was slightly shy to sing publicly when she was very young. That shyness soon disappeared as Gordon grew older and started participating in talent shows as well as the her secondary school choir, which brought her to sing classical music with greats such as The Bach Choir singing the “African Sanctus” on stage in front of hundreds of people, and musicals “Annie” and “Bugsy Malone” (because of her love for acting) at her secondary school.

However, the creativity didn’t stop there. The hyperactive youngster sometimes wrote songs for fun too. Now 19, she is professionally writing for and working on her first album and it only makes her happy to perform for people and show off her talent. The album will contain “a proficient mix of music taking you from slow R&B and Jazz, like the song ‘This Lonely Place,’ to more up-tempo beats of Urban and Reggae, like ‘Dance All Night.’” “That song is one of my favorites…the beat just pumps right through my chest and makes me dance which is what it’s supposed to do to everyone.” Her love for dancing, not professional, comes from the tradition of her family’s Jamaican heritage; in this culture dancing is a big part of life and Gordon vows to continue representing her heritage.

During her musical journey, Gordon has performed at talent shows such as the 2nd annual Uplifting Minds talent competition where she won the trophy for songwriting and got introduced to the organizer of the West Coast School Bus Tour. Under the tour she has performed at numerous high schools, middle schools and other events around Los Angeles. Events include the Unity Fair and another showcase at the Mixed Nuts Comedy Club. She also holds the title of first place champion for singing original music at the USA World Showcase at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. As if it wasn’t already outstanding, Gordon has even had her own gig at the all famous Knitting Factory in Hollywood. “I had so much fun, it didn’t even feel like my first show,” she said all teeth showing in a smile.

The young woman promises to bring forth some “freshness from Europe with a little island twist” to the music game with her upcoming album which is set to hit stores some time during 2007. “I don’t want people to hear the same old thing they listen to on the radio everyday. I need change in order to be original and have longevity and that’s exactly what I want to achieve.” She personifies the words confidence, passion and creativity with an urban and classy style and this surely shows through her songs.

This girl is sweet but fierce enough to take the charts by storm and you best believe we’ll be seeing more of Amanda very soon.

Gordon is the first artist to launch from the independent record label Higher Levels Productions, which she strongly represents.
