+/- {Plus/Minus} Xs on Your Eyes -- October 21, 2008

Xs on Your Eyes is the fourth +/- {Plus/Minus} album and the follow-up to 2006's widely acclaimed Let's

Build a Fire. The band has since cut-back on the sound bites, synthesizers, and programmed drum beats while

retaining the band's trademark fusion of complex arrangements that are easy on the ears. The album's lead single, "Snowblind," as well as its likely follow-

up, "Subdued," are possibly the greatest songs the band has ever recorded and rockets them to a totally new level. The ascendant excitement that's gradually

progressed to this point is still very much there, but it's exploded into a burst of sunlight as Xs on Your Eyes is distinctly more calm and confident

in tone and is destined to become a favorite of many.

Pidgeon - Might as Well Go Eat Worms -- September 23, 2008

Might as Well Go Eat Worms showcases the bands new line-up and undeniable maturation in sound. Pidgeon has since perfected upon their loud-quiet-loud signature form, finding balance between beauty and destruction. California the first single off the record opens with rhythmic riffs and precision drumming before giving way to an onslaught of distorted, crunching, sludgy guitars offset by semi-sweet pop vocals. Throughout the record Micah Foleys (former member of Bay Area hardcore legends Used Naked Bloody) bone rattling screams are assuaged by Val Iwamasa angelic voice (think Ninna Person of The Cardigans meets Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead). On Might As Well Eat Worms Pidgeon has shed all remaining sense of innocence and emerged leaner, stronger, and ready to devour you whole.

Little Teeth - Child Bearing Man -- September 09, 2008

Child

Bearing ManThe glorious debut from San Francisco's Little Teeth makes like the Wizard of Oz's Lollipop Guild drunk on whiskey and fruit pies. Brutally honest, dizzyingly compelling and.so.much.fun. RIYL: Animal Collective, Deerhoof, Bjork

Azeda Booth - In Flesh Tones -- July 22, 2008

In Flesh

Tones, Azeda Booths debut full length, is a benchmark album, a thing of dazzling beauty and fragile

inspiration. Its not so much a bomb in the mineshaft as it is an incandescent

dove illuminating the way out. The Calgary, Alberta six-piece conjure up the

sound of human travel. The arrivals and departures are hazy and blurred, the

tone both tense and delicate, the fuel potent and clean, and the direction most

definitely UP.

The Dudley Corporation - Year of the Husband -- July 04, 2008

Almost 8 years of age, The Corpo can be classified as quite a large brat by now, and album 3, “Year of the

Husband”, has been brewing for almost half their life span. Year of the Husband sees the Corpo moving in more brutal and angular directions than

before. Songs shift from frenzied onslaughts (The Lens Begin, Leave a Last Kiss) to melancholic lullabies (We Angled our Shadows, Fool), but this time out

every song has been treated like it ought to be a single, and each one deserves to be a hit. Guests include Kenseth Thibideaux (Howard Hello,

Pinback), Carol Keogh (The Tycho Brahe, Autamata) and Nigel Farrely (Waiting Room).

THe Gang - Zero Hits -- June 03, 2008

Throughout Zero Hits, The Gang’s Gary Keating’s raspy vocals drip with whisky, cigarettes, late night house

parties and rowdy times. There is toughness to this band. They have a sound that could not possibly come from anywhere else then New York - no rules but an

explosion of raucous guitars, snarling keyboards driving drums and undeniably catchy anthemic choruses that knock you to the ground, then pull you up just in

time to knock you on your ass again.

Sybris - Into the Trees -- May 20, 2008

Into the Trees is propelled forward by singer Angela Mullenhour's sugar coated knife-edge voice, a unique

entity in itself, brimming with shattering potential and weighted with its own world-weariness, elegant, bruised but never defeated. Chicagos Sybris is a

quartet of powerful grace, the sound of a battalion of Valkyries astride winged horses bound for Valhalla. The sweep of giant white wings in the wind, the

creak of the saddle beneath the weight of warrior goddesses in full regalia, the dreamy, gauzy, glittery haze of the ghosts of the warrior dead behind them

floating towards eternal glory.

Okay - Huggable Dust -- May 20, 2008

At first, Huggable

Dust seems to be a break up record, but it is much much more. It grows and blossoms and touches on so many aspects of the heart; longing, loss,

obsession, disagreement, and resilience. Okay's Marty Anderson writes and performs his songs with a uniquely kaleidoscopic approach of mixing repetition and

variation. This is the language of pop music, of course, but Marty's songs fold in on each other acrobatically in ways that aren't always apparent on a

single listen. Multi-layered and baroque, dense layers of technological and organic sounds fizzle under gentle pop melodies.

Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles LP reissue -- July 08, 2008

Fabulous Muscles, Xiu Xiu's third album from 2004, was an artistic breakthrough and helped expand the bands

already devoted following. The LP version (unavailable for the last year or so) was originally released on the Free Porcupine Society label and has already

sported two or three different covers. The new cover, as sultry and frightening as the music within, is by Brooklyn-based rising art star J. Morrison.

Favorite tracks: I Luv the Valley OH!, Bunny Garner, and the unbelievable title

track.

Xiu Xiu - La Foret LP reissue -- July 08, 2008

La Foret, Xiu Xiu's fourth album, released in 2005, saw the band moving in an even darker, more

experimental direction (and thats saying something). The LP version of the

record was only released as an extremely limited double 10 oressed and sold

only by the band. Now on 12 with an incredible cover also by Brooklyn-based

artist J. Morrison. Includes Muppet Face, Pox, and Rose of Sharon.
