Zuckerbaby – A work in progress.

What are you going to do if you’ve already been through what most bands would consider a “career”? You’ve had a major label deal, critical acclaim, played almost every venue in Canada, toured with scads of “big” acts, and had several hits at radio and Much Music? You’ve had some member changes, internal strife, been fucked over by a major label, and ultimately decided to go your separate ways?

If you feel there is more to say and do, you start over from the beginning. That’s precisely what Zuckerbaby is doing. After a five year hiatus Calgary’s own alt-pop misfits are back together because the ending never felt right. It’s not that they didn’t have anything to do. Vocalist Andrew Eichhorn had The Yorkton Spokes with Lorrie Matheson, as well as the beginnings of a solo project. Ed Tiegs was busy playing with several local acts as a bassist or drummer after “giving up music” for a couple of weeks. Ian Grant (the mayor of rock and roll in Calgary) was fronting The Black Dots, playing bass in The Remones, and still holding down his position as one of the most in demand drummers in the city. Guitarist (and ZB co-founder along with Andy) Reed Shimozawa was producing and playing, most notably with Todd Kerns of The Age of Electric and Static in Stereo. With all that going on, why bother taking a step backward? If you ask any of the members of Zuckerbaby, they’ll tell you that it’s because of the music. It’s because of the sound that comes forth when they play together. It’s because of the feeling that comes from great songs played by a great band. Sometimes you just have to do what feels right.

The band isn’t worried about fitting in with the local scene, or the global one. They didn’t really fit in before. They were too pop for the rockers, and too rock for the popsters; too different for mainstream, too accomplished as players for the indie crowd. Yet, there was always a following for Zuckerbaby, and that’s not apt to change as long as there are still a few people who just want to hear some good melodic pop/rock songs played by people who really love playing them.
