The answer is musical ability, substance, originality, songwriting.the question? What has modern/alternative

rock been lacking in recent years? It seems to be becoming less and less rewarding for bands who put forth their

best effort to break the mold and strive for originality at all costs. Waiting In Vain is one of those bands.

Waiting In Vain’s chemistry is somewhat of an anomaly, being that they all found each other through internet

classified postings. Chuck Mahoney (drums) and Mike Perillo (guitar) were the first two to meet in late ‘05,

followed shortly by Nate Jensen (vocals/guitar) and lastly Chris Vines (bass). They come from all ends of the Bay

Area to meet at their rehearsal studio in Oakland, California. The band recorded a 5 song EP in Winter of ’06, and

took to the stage Spring of the same year, and since then have been relentlessly playing live shows, followed up

with their newest EP in Spring of ‘07

Diverse musical tastes are the main factor behind determining originality in a bands sound. Waiting In Vain

draws influences coming in from all ends of the spectrum. Some of the more prevalent in their music are:

Incubus, A Perfect Circle, and The Police, although classic rock also has a huge influence on the bands songwriting.

Their newly recorded songs reflect a maturing, and diversifying in the band’s sound. Their style has branched out,

yet all of their songs sound more distinct than ever. Acquiesce is the opening track on the new EP. Preceded by

a short acoustic intro, this track hits hard with a catchy chorus where Nate’s vocals lament: I can’t seem to find

all the signs that point the way/and I don’t have a reason why, but I can’t seem to turn the page. Acquiesce is

followed by Laying Down To Be Let Out. The most radio friendly track on the EP, this song is given an almost Latin

feel by Chuck’s intricate drumming during the verse, followed by a driving chorus that is nearly impossible to get

out of your head. The next track is Backslide. A stripped down version, this gives the listener an opportunity to

hear a Waiting In Vain song as they are originally composed, only acoustic guitar and vocals. Finally the EP wraps

up with the mellow, groove laden September. With complementary guitar parts, the bass and drums locked into an

airtight groove, and a bittersweet vocal melody, this song truly represents Waiting In Vain as a band.

Although one might not pick it up upon first listen, Waiting In Vain’s songs bring in the listener with under-

lying themes of hope. The lyrics are enigmatic enough that a listener can use them to paint their own picture of

what the songs are about. Whether you’re looking to find deeper meaning, or just a good song to listen to, this band

has something to bring to the table.
