Roaring straight outta Footscray are a new breed of dynamic musicians - A savvy six-piece, ready to make you dance uncontrollably; a tight, raw and excitable revue that has been mesmerizing audiences from Fitzroy to Yackandandah…

and back again…and so on.

Building their foundations upon their ridiculously fun and epic live show; White Boyz Can’t Funk are out to prove…that, yes, they can funk, despite popular belief.

By infusing elements from the heyday of their Funk, Soul & Motown heroes, with their roots in Australian Pub-Rock, the Boyz have stumbled onto something big.

Worshipping the likes of Sly Stone, the Breakestra, JB and The Meters; their sound has gradually shifted to incorporate other aspects of Hip-Hop, Blues and Jamaican Popular Music.

Gigs? Yes they’ve gigged a bit, The Espy, Revolver, Bar Open, The Evelyn, Ding-Dong Lounge and much much more…Playing alongside local legends like: San Lazaro, SS Pecker, Little Red and iconic soul DJ - Vince Peach.

But enough of the propaganda, it’s up to you! So get up, and get down to a show! Buy an EP! CHECK THEM OUT! - Chances are they’ll be playing this weekend, and the next, and the one after that… well, you get the picture.

Who said White Boyz Can’t Funk?

It's not often that you need to hide your face to get entry into a Saturday night gig in Fitzroy. So I’m wondering what to expect as I slink up a back-ally to a warehouse where they’re selling tickets to costumed crowds from the bottom of a fire escape.

Beneath the electric six-piece outfit known as White Boyz Can’t Funk, hundreds of masqueraders are jumping in a sea of soul. At least, there's supposed to be six of them. So many people have jumped onto the stage its hard to tell, especially when lead vocalist Jono Reisacher shares the mike with half the crowd and everybody is dressed for a Carnavale parade- including the band.

White Boyz music is soul music. It’s the kind of music you would hear blasting from a boom-box in a Detroit chop-shop, as men in greasy overalls work the last of their greasy week and start the Friday funk. I can’t imagine it coming from six Melbourne boys, most of whom came from the sticks and none of whom bare resemblance to Sly or James.

Yet here I am jumping to ‘40 Hour Tune’ like I just worked a forty-hour week in heels.

Their mileage isn’t bad either; gigging around Melbourne for the last few years White Boyz have been sending their sound into the musically barren wastelands of overly produced bubble-pop and injecting much needed substance. For any fussy eaters, there’s enough funk to cut your teeth on. Lydon Johnston (tenor sax) and Liam McGorry (trumpet) provide a sharp orchestra behind twin Joe and Kieran Daly’s infectious rhythm section. Patrick Lundin (drums) kicks and crashes his way through the frenzy, and the joyful anarchy of White Boyz Can’t Funk pulls everyone into the groove.

This is white-sploitation at its best.
