Review Of White Ace Supporting Status Quo 24/5/2008

White Ace who hail from Cumbernauld and Glasgow. Were the out and out winners of the competition; on stage they pulled out all the right stuff that these young up and coming rockers do on stage. They were tight with their songs, stage presence was just like they have been doing this for years, and as brothers they probably have been. Their guitar licks were in the right places. Chris & Craig McCabe both on guitar with Craig as main vocalist. Gerry Loughrey on Bass and backing vocals along with Chris. Sitting at the back is one of the best up and coming drummers of his generation, Dave McCluskey. Setting out a thumping rhythm along with Gerry, the tone of the set was set. Letting the brothers loose with their twin guitars, weaving the songs making it the total package of great music. After each song, the large audience who came to see Quo were getting louder and louder in their response to the lads on stage and rightly so. The great thing about this band is they will get better & better so watch this space. Remember the name White Ace.

Richie Edwards: "We had some guys supporting us in Glasgow the other night called White Ace. They’re barely eighteen years old but they’re the most incredible players and really lovely guys. I went to have a look at them when they went on and I was totally blown away.

I found their EP in my suitcase just this morning and banged it on in my computer, and it’s really f*cking good. It may be a little bit naïve in places, but give those guys a year, or a bit of time with someone who can shape them a little bit, and they’ll be knock-outs.

When Richie Edwards of Stone Gods/The Darkness fame claims you "are the most incredible players" and that he "was totally blown away" then it would seem you are a very good band. This is exactly what has happened to young Glasgow (or more specifically, Cumbernauld) rockers White Ace. Not only that, but the tunes and the looks back up exactly what the famous bassist/guitarist/vocalist had to say.

Looking somewhat like Aerosmith, having bluesy licks popping up everywhere and so on, you'd imagine that White Ace had been doing this for years, and at the top level as well. Unfortunately, the four boys are still nowhere near the heights of their heros, but if Take Me Down is anything to go by, they'll be there soon enough to help the music scene realise what rock music actually is (read: not what the cribs are getting away with).

Alongside the various beautiful & rocking guitar riffs, Craig McCabe has a good screech on him, one of the best voices suited to blues rock I've heard in a long time.and I'd bet he's not half bad at a ballad either. If you consider yourself a fan of rock legends Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin amongst others, then definitely check these lads out. Or if you're a fan of the underground scene - Wired Desire, Peep Show, Drugdealer Cheerleader etc, then this group is definitely one to add to your list. No doubt about it.

Oh and they also supported legendary blues/three chord rockers Status Quo in 2008, easily a great achievement for any young band.

The other songs on the myspace "Air" and "All My Life" back up exactly what "Take Me Down" started, only wetting your appetite for more. If there would be a criticism, it would be there's not enough music on the profile, three songs just isn't enough - you'll want more.

If so, go out and catch White Ace live (which I have been lucky to do) as they will surpass any views you have of them, more tunes, tight live act, slide guitar and the odd harmonica - I'd strongly urge you to get out and see this band.

Other reviews tell you to "watch this space" or "remember the name White Ace" or something along those lines, and they're all spot on - Craig and Chris McCabe, Gerry Loughrey & Dave McCluskey - well done to all of you, and keep it up.
