Whatabout Music was started in 2006 by radio and music producer Dave Bianchi. It was at first created as an outlet for his productions at the adjoined Emergency Room studio in Barcelona, but after hundreds of musicians rapidly contributed their energy, it became more of a community than a label—made up of 23 bands, plus numerous musicians and artists from various parts of the world who enjoy Catalunya’s status as a cultural crossroads. Artists from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Romania, England, Ireland, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, the USA, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Africa, Israel, and Japan have recorded over 40 albums as part of a constantly growing catalog from Whatabout Music.

Within the diverse catalog, you can find releases from Melou, Amanda Jayne, Leslie Helpert, Dodó, Selva de Mar, Samantha De Siena, Gadjo, Mû, Daniel da Lança, Maarten Swaan, Leonardo Trincabelli, Negritos, The Gangsters of Love, and Dave Bianchi himself. Centered in Barcelona, the label forms a network of artists that spans around the world, artists who tour every year on practically every continent, and embrace new ways of promotion in the digital realm.

The sub-group Whatabout Jazz features recordings from musicians who venture into the experimental side of jazz. Live recordings from Catalan players in the MUT Trio and the Marc Mena Quartet, super-drummer Oriol Roca, and Sardinian musician and artist Paolo Angeli put the label into a niche group of those releasing experimental music.

Whatabout Music is distributed through IODA, with the catalog available for sale on iTunes, Emusic, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster, Myspace, and dozens of more services. Through IODA’s extensive promotional network, with the help of services like YouTube, Spotify and LastFM, and with the continuing efforts of the groups themselves, the Whatabout catalog has received over 200,000 downloads.

Renowned DJs and producers have remixed songs from the Whatabout catalog. Critics from Europe and America, both online and print, have written up shining reviews about the music released through Whatabout. Spain’s national paper La Vanguardia even called founder Dave Bianchi an “unusually brilliant” producer. A growing list of blogs, podcasts, online radio, and terrestrial radio are supporting Whatabout’s catalog.
