BIOGRAPHY:
WEAK13 is a British industrial / metal / grunge act, founded in 1999 by Nick J.Townsend in Kidderminster, United Kingdom. Inspired by 1980's Video Nasties, Underground music, Comic books, The Grunge and 90's music scene and real life. Each song is a different story. Lyrics about loved ones who have passed away, songs about the future, death, life, survival, friendship, love, hate and positive thinking. All the guitars on all the recordings are played using strange dark low tunings. WEAK13 is any style Nick J.Townsend wants to be. From Industrial Metal fused with death metal guitars to Dark electro beats entwined with Low tuned acoustic guitars. WEAK13 is every form of music in it's rawest form. There is a song for everyone. As its main singer, producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Townsend is the only official member of WEAK13 and remains solely responsible for its musical and artistic direction. WEAK13's music is every genre with metal overtones. Townsend recruits a live band to perform with him on stage after recording WEAK13 material. WEAK13 when playing LIVE is 'Nick J.Townsend' (Vocals/Guitar), 'Wesley Smith' (Bass) and 'Neel Parmar' (Drums). Nick J.Townsend breaks as many rules as possible. Wanted feedback, dark subjects, erratic song structure, raw sounds, one take recordings, surreal ideas and hook lines that you will never forget. There is only one WEAK13 but there are many sounds. Nick J.Townsend is a British underground musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist. He operates under the studio name WEAK13.
SONGS & TUNINGS:
Weak13 use a variety of strange low-guitar tunings, unorthodox riffs and dark sounds for every song. Every Weak13 song is different. The lyrics written by Nick J.Townsend are always filled with subliminal messages, personal experiences and harsh reality, always taking full advantage of poetic freedom. No subject is out of bounds. Weak13 make sure the music is as free-sounding as possible, often doing recordings in one-take in order to capture their live sound. In some cases audio mistakes are purposely left in on the final mix of Weak13 recordings, Nick J.Townsend often prefers out-of-tune-parts to make a song more to his liking, leaving in bits that most artists wouldn't dare do. Fan favourites such as 'Prouder Than U (1 & 2), 'WakeDown', 'I Name Myself', 'When U say When', 'Death Machine', Kind To Be Cruel', 'Prouder Than U' and 'The All Seeing I' have all created controversy and acclaim within the hearts and minds of many for different reasons. A Weak13 recording is always deep in meaning and thought provoking. The music is heavily inspired by art, manily British horror comic 'SCREAM'. Comic strips such as 'Thirteenth Floor' (art by Jose Ortiz), 'Manix', 'Doomlord' (By John Wagner, Alan Grant and Italian artist Heinzl), 'The Amstor Computer' (Eagle Comics), 'Deaths Head' & 'Dragons Claws' (art by Geoff Senior) have inspired many Weak13 songs.
HOW WEAK13 STARTED:
Weak13 first hit the music scene at the later half of the 20th Century. When all around were preparing for the millennium - Nick J.Townsend was creating the music which became Weak13. Nick J.Townsend left art college and threw himself into music. Nick is a self taught guitarist and singer songwriter who had a very unusual and somewhat difficult childhood. Music was the one thing that would keep him sane throughout his school days, he never to begin with saw himself as a musician and had hoped to be noticed someday as a cartoonist/illustrator, but after picking up the guitar decided that he needed to expand his art musically. After joining a few bands Nick decided years later to create his own and called it Weak13. He first created all the music on a drum machine (BOSS DR5) with the intention of playing guitar and singing Live on his own, but Nick attracted musicians like a magnet and within no time the first line-up for Weak13 was created which consisted of 'Nick J.Townsend' (Guitars/Vocals/drum machine), J.Talylor (Guitar) and Anna Clark (Bass). The first LIVE drummer for WEAK13 was Luke Johnson of the band LOST PROPHETS.
Many musicians have come and gone in Weak13 for various reasons but Nick J.Townsend from day one has always written the music - that's the deal. Nick always knew that other musicians could be unreliable and always stamped his authority on the music. "It's not about being selfish, it's about giving fans a band that won't stop making music and I won't stop unlike others who have, i've seen fans devastated by a band going their seperate ways, well i'm a constant and that gives the Weak13 fans a guarantee". What makes Weak13 interesting to many is the vast amount of styles ranging from grunge, industrial metal, death metal, rap metal, rock, blues, metal, punk and thrash. Nick J.Townsend has become a multi-talented musician able to adapt to most situations that await Weak13.
43 Track Album to celebrate 10 years of WEAK13
*****************************************************
To celebrate 10 years of the music of WEAK13 an album will be released which will change the music industry. Nick J.Townsend announced on 09.09.09 that he has an unreleased 43 track album which he will release at his discretion. Until now he has never released a WEAK13 studio album. The 43 track album has taken him 10 years to write and in his own words will be "One of the most dangerous albums ever". Nick has recorded most of the album with an engineer who uses very unorthodox methods who goes under the name 'Crazy MULE'. Other producers such as Matt Tarbuck and Craig Grove have also worked with Nick J.Townsend.
Fréhel - Si tu n'étais pas là has inspired the WEAK13 album.
"The sound of the old 1930's vinyl really made me think about how I want the whole album to sound, I want to capture unwanted noise and give it a place and home on WEAK13 songs. Valves and hiss are instruments of their own" Quote: Nick J.Townsend
