The VfL Bochum 1848 e.V. arised out of the three Bochum-based clubs Turnverein Bochum (founded the 26th July 1848), Germania 06 (the city’s first football club, founded in 1906) and TuS Bochum on 29th July 1949, after they decided to associate the 14th April 1936.

Bochum spent the first years of the post-war era in Germany’s lower divisions before appearing in the Bundesliga for the first time in the summer of 1971. In the following decades Bochum reached the German Cup-final for the second time (in 1988 after the first final in 1968; both games were lost) and managed to establish in Germany’s Championship, which gave them the nickname „Die Unabsteigbaren“ ("the unrelegateables"). But for all that, in June 1993 the club was relegated for the first time and had to play in the second Bundesliga for the next season. Ever since the VfL commutes between the second division and the first Bundesliga.

In 1997 the team, which was lead by one of the club’s best players ever, Dariusz Wosz, reached the UEFA-Cup after ending up on the 5th rank in a fantastic season. They played memorable matches against European top clubs, such as K.V. Club Bruges, AFC Ajax Amsterdam and Trabzonspor.

Bochum managed to repeat this feat in 2005, but failed to reach the second round after two unlucky matches against the Belgian club Standard de Liège (0:0 and 1:1).

Bochum plays in the Bundesliga after having been promoted in 2006.
