the story of Vertical is fucking similar to the story of funk. The suburbs, blaxploitation, bars, acid jazz, cars, women and motors, strobo, '70 pants, the white hydrant on red background, superfly,the whistles on the city, the Herbie Hancock's glasses, spies and secrets agents, Lupin, pursuit races. there's nothing better than funk for a musician, who perspires while he's playing. In acid-jazz concerts, when the band starts to play, people take the clothes off. There's nothing a bass man can't do in ten days. Acid jazz is not touched by what the fate plan for the rest of mankind.
Knowing that Vertical would be a lifestyle more than a band, three young musicians named Pippo Marco and Gazza choosed to way to play together. And the way decided immediately to give them a gift, the organ prodigy baby, Paolino (Paul-ino).
In that moment, the almost perfect Vertical machine needed the touch of a warm and disinhibited voice. For this, the quartet organized the getaway of the best and well remaining member of the Argentinian A. A. orchestra gas, the metro-monkey.
Completed with him, Vertical stay every day on the underground and club stages. Not for money, not for fame but for, as the story of funk teach us, giving life to a ghost city, continuing in the name of groove, 'cause women must feeling to be women .
First successes arrived in summer 1999 and 2000 when they won "Zanza rock contest" and then the "Cramps Music Contest", supported by the historic same label.
In 2001 they put on music a film review on pornographic '20enties silent films, called "the sound of Silence". They continue to play in Vicenza and North Italy, in clubs, occupied centers, and theaters making 150 lives in 2 years.
In 2002 they play as support band at JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET (JTQ)concert.
They repeated the JTQ experience again in 2003 and 2005.
In the same year, the won the "Ferrock price", in the same stage of SUd Sound System.
Growing during the years, they arrived to win the price for THE BEST ITALIAN INSTRUMENTAL PROPOSAL at the M.E.I. (Indipendent Labels Meeting) in 2005.
Meanwhile, they played as support band for the "godfather of Soul": JAMES BROWN.
Now the band plays all around Italy, sharing the stage with other different bands, such as Rosolina mar, good fellas, ogm, one dimensional man, east rodero, almamegretta, motel connection.
.and in the last period they begin some projects with other musicians and some Djs - playing with M. Tuzza on drums and percussions and with L. Moresco on trombone - , and artists, experimenting their music in videos and visual performances.
The meaning of Vertical, choosed not for fate but for a pure aesthetic sense in the own word, hides an historical musical meaning that meets the acid jazz and the band philosophy. In the music history, the word "vertical" is used by a lot of historians and everybody can use it in different meanings: from Massimo Mila is used to explain the rivolutional passage from a music made of interlacement of melodies and pholyphonies to a musice composed by melody and accompaniment, which identifies the birth of music modern concept; for other historians identifies every espression of tension made with vibration and scratches, which are present in jazz music, taken from african people.
