Biography

Back in 2005 in Gävle, Sweden Erik Kumpulainen, Kristofer Nilsson and Robert Fältström decided to call it quits with Mortellez (This band produced four demos in the black/death metal genre), since they felt this band wasn’t making any progress; there was no lust to keep on going and no one gave their personal one-hundred percent anymore. Simply, this band was going nowhere.

Kristofer Nilsson was, back then, playing with Withered beauty and he asked his fellow band member Jonas Lindström (drums) if he was interested in joining this brand new project. And of course, since Lindström is a man of passion for the metal music, he did not hesitate! The band was at this time called Svartalv (a dark elf from the Norse mythology).

With this line up, the band started writing songs and rehearsing. The musical direction was in the black- and death metal vein, influenced by melodic bands such as Dawn, Enslaved and Dissection, and by more straight-to-the-point bands as Marduk and Dark funeral. The death metal influences came from the whole range of the genre.

Nilsson and Kumpulainen, who handled the vocals at the time, came to the conclusion that a lead vocalist was needed. Luckily Lindström knew of an old friend who had just moved to Gävle and was in search for a band. Said and done, Tommy Holmer tried out and there was no question about it. He was perfect for the band.

After a few months of rehearsing the band entered MHM studios and during four days in February 2006, the demo “Behind thy eyes” was recorded. While in the studio, Svartalv changed their name to Undivine since there were no Swedish lyrics or anything from the Norse mythology in them. The lyrics are mostly pretty personal reflections of life and death, religion and the overall stupidity of mankind.

The demo “Behind thy eyes” was released as a limited (150 copies), hand numbered MCD by underground label Demonical records in Sweden.

Undivine started working on the songs for the debut album right away after the Behind thy eyes chapter. The band decided to try out the slightly unconventional approach to record the album first and getting the contract with a finished product. “A deceitful calm” was composed, recorded and mixed in Studio Apocalypse (headquarters of epic doom metal band Isole). The record deal was signed (with Aural offerings, France) in late 2007 and the album saw the light of day in 2008.

During the mixing sessions in 2007, Fältström decided to leave Undivine to give his family and career full focus. He had a break from playing the bass for a while, but today he is again active, in the band Rebel collective. Shortly after Fältström’s departure, Nilsson picked up the bass and the band went on as a four-piece.

“Into dust” was recorded in Apocalypse with, again, Jonas Lindström on the engineer chair. Lindström is also responsible for some of the composing on the new album. His main influence was Swedish death metal band Hypocrisy. The recording of “Into dust” began before the debut album was released.

Sami Mäki (rhythm and lead guitar) joined the troop in 2008, around the release of the debut. He did some of the solos on “Into dust”.

In February/March 2009 Undivine negotiated and signed for the release of “Into dust” with Northern Silence, Germany.

Undivine has not done any touring, however some serious hitting-the-road will hopefully be possible in the future. So far they have just done a couple of shows a year back home. The first gig was as opening act for Krisiun. This band doesn’t do youth recreation centres, quality before quantity.

At the moment Undivine is writing songs for the third album. The vision is to create a darker, more sinister album.
