After 10 years of putting the rock into pop/rock outfit Everclear, bassist Craig Montoya parted ways with the group looking for a new beginning. Montoya didn't have to look far to find willing and eager partners for his new project. Fellow rock legend Brian Lehfeldt (Sweaty Nipples, Wehrmacht, Drumattica,Cryptic Slaughter)) had been touring with Everclear for the last few years and the two shared a desire to get back to a more "rock n roll" vibe. So as soon as both departed Everclear they got together at Craig's studio and began working on a few songs that ultimately became the first Tri-Polar record. Along with guitarist Scotty Heard (Sweaty Nipples/Slave to the System), the trio developed a sound described by one critic as "Deja-new", a cross between old school AC/DC, The Cult and Aerosmith combined with the more modern sounds of Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. The band played a handful of local and national shows while finishing up the record. Shortly before the release of the first album, Scotty Heard was replaced for a short period of time by Kevin Hahn (Red Sector) and the band went on to play even more shows over the course the next few months. Around the first of 2006 Craig decided he wanted to step away from the bass and focus on singing exclusively, so the band brought in fellow Portland native Eric Helzer (Drumattica) to pick up the bass duties. At this same time, Scotty Heard was asked to rejoin the band to join Kevin and make Tri-Polar a two guitar band, thus, turning Tri-Polar into a five piece. The band played it first show with the new lineup to a sold out crowd in Portland in May 06 and now has plans to tour throughout the summer and return to start work on the new album in late 2006.
