Transcending Mortality were a progressive metal band that formed in Sydney, Australia in the year 2004. The original line up, consisting of Shane Linfoot (Guitars), Mike Zoias (Vocals), Jonathan Talan (Guitars), Corey Eves (Bass) and Matthew Shriffer (Drums), began playing shows in Sydney and quickly gained a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting new bands.



In 2006 they released their debut album The Last Horizon and toured Australia with Nevermore, one of the bands biggest influences. The tour was a success and the album received considerable critical praise from all over the world. The band was soon playing their own headlining shows around Australia and in May 2007 they supported Sweden’s Evergrey on their Australian tour.



Live appearances were scaled back during the next year while writing for the follow up to The Last Horizon. It became apparent during the writing sessions that a stylistic shift was happening within the band and the new material was leaning more towards the doom metal sound rather than the faster tempos and power metal influenced prog metal the band had displayed on their debut. Guitarist Jonathan Talan also left the band during this time and Nathaniel Smith joined as bassist replacing Corey Eves. Instead of recruiting a new guitarist to replace Jonathan it was decided they would stay as a four piece and they played their first shows with this line up in early 2008.



In late 2008 Transcending Mortality decided to call it quits with band members citing the need to move onto other projects. Shane, Matthew and Nat formed Rituals of the Oak to concentrate solely on playing doom metal. Mike collaborated on a project with Stu Marshall (Paindivision, Dungeon) in the power metal style called Empires of Eden, and later joined Sydney power/prog band Avarin as lead vocalist - which also features former band mate Nat on Bass.



Although the band had technically broken up, they decided to finish an EP titled The Mirrors Eye which contained 2 tracks written just after The Last Horizon was released - and that they feel encompass the band at the peak of their progressive metal sound. The EP was completed in April 2009.
