Comin’ on strong from New York City, by way of Nashville, Gainesville, and Atlanta here’s TIGERS & MONKEYS! Not some rag-tag, hole-in-the-wall typical Brazilian fusion wanna-be band, no this is the real thing! T&M will lift you up and take to a place where rock, blues, soul, and garage unite and stand on their tippy toes with drinks in the air toasting all the heathens that join their celebration. The band is led by the talented Indian (dots not feathers) - American female musician, Shonali Bhowmik whose inspirations come from classic artists such as the Beatles, Big Star, Dean Martin and The Pixies. T&M is a veritable potpourri of races, religions and sexual orientations (North and South)! Formerly of Atlanta’s formidable Ultrababyfat (no relation to Kimora Lee Simmons), Ms. Bhowmik, whose day job is as a lawyer and comedienne with The Variety Shac, sings in a raspy soulful voice that she was born with (she doesn’t smoke!)
The name of the band was inspired after a trip to the Bronx zoo where bassist Jason Lam (think James Iha with dark hair) found a discarded cereal box of frosted flakes and immediately conceived of the name ’The Tigers.’ ’Monkeys’ was added when guitarist/keyboardist/drummer Russ Dungan, of the South, (think white trash) saw a monkey wrench on one of his morning golf cart rides along the Hudson River Park where he often cruises. Other members in the Tigers and Monkeys collaborative are Joachim Kearns (guitar), Jeff Sheinkopf (keys, drums) with Amy Miles and Ali Smith occasionally adding backing vocals. The band plays pretty cool rockin’ songs that sometimes have hand clapping and foot-stomping in them. Sometimes even the audience does these things!
Tigers and Monkeys has shared stages with Sleater Kinney, The Shins and Ted Leo and The Pharmacists. Following a show opening for Urge Overkill at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, the band was approached by an enthusiastic sound engineer, Kenny Lienhardt. Over the past year Kenny has been recording Tigers and Monkeys as well as the talented Matt Gill and the result is the highly anticipated “Loose Mouth!” Now at Insound. Check it and them out!
