Four years after what they themselves describe as a difficult second album, Thirteen Senses are about to release a new album, recorded, produced and mixed in their own London studio.
To recap, the four members of Thirteen Senses were plucked from their Cornish homes by one of those whirlwind A & R moments in 2003. Debut single ‘Thru The Glass’ was a radio hit and debut album, ‘The Invitation’ one of the top sellers of 2004.
Thirteen Senses are known to many who would not immediately class themselves as fans. With their music having graced the likes of ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Bones and The 4400 amongst others, their ability to write honest, emotional songs in widescreen has made them a particular favourite of UK and US music supervisors and presented them to a massive audience across the globe.
‘There was never any doubt that we would make more music whatever the situation’ says Brendon. ‘Not having a label and an A & R actually worked for us, we finally started to make the music that we love, writing purely for ourselves rather than to order.’ Having acquired a fair amount of recording equipment during their time as a signed act, Tom set about installing himself as producer at their studio in London and, between short and long breaks that Adam attributes to ‘life happening’ they laid down the tracks that would become their third, and most accomplished album.
One listen to ‘Crystal Sounds’ makes clear what their previous records only glimpsed. Always good with a melody and unafraid of being seen as ‘mainstream’ the new Thirteen Senses sound is more expansive, more muscular and more experimental. The lack of pressure to release also allowed the band reflective time to revisit the tracks and construct an album that flows, from the more accessible likes of ‘Crystal Sounds’ and ‘Home’ at its opening, to the march towards the epic gradients of ‘I Saw Stars Disappear’ and the orchestral swirls and swoops of ‘Out There’. Always fans of the likes of Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and Pink Floyd, the freedom offered by recording this album by and for themselves has seen the four journey into areas that for many reasons were off limits earlier in their career. With no pressures or expectations on their backs, Thirteen Senses have developed into the fully fledged epic pop band that was promised back at the beginning.
