Wasif Sayyed a.k.a. The What Supreme is slowly making his mark on the re-emerging Birmingham hip-hop scene. As well as writing, recording and performing, he continues to promote numerous local acts and up-and-coming UK hip-hop innovators.

He’s also done rap coaching in schools and community centres in Birmingham and around the UK.

The What Supreme is first and foremost a rap vocalist. His vocal style is visceral and ethereal; listening to him in full flow I see a ragged company of wolves stampeding towards a man-cub not to kill it but to raise it as one of their own. His vocabulary is deep-fried in a vat of dictionaries. His subject matter is constantly expanding, but the themes of earnest concern for the hip-hop generation, the strive towards spiritual wholeness, family affairs, apocalyptic visions and political dissidence tend to be woven into most of his music. There’s a childlike giddy love for the art-form too, which often bubbles to the surface.

The What Supreme is a confident hip-hop producer as well. What many people wish to hear is a happy marriage of analogue and digital, gentle melodies and neck muscle effecting sub-bass, rhythmic subtlety and unkempt rambunctious noise, in essence: very approachable experiments. More often than not The What Supreme’s compositions are just this.

80’s wide-eyed wonder, 90’s guile and 00’s natural intertwining of the conscious and the playful. The What Supreme exhibits elements of all 3 decades and in doing so is solidifying a distinct style and philosophy of rap and beat-making. His material beckons his peers and listeners: I’m beating a fresh path here, join the party.
