It was late one night in a small bar in downtown Tokyo that the idea for 'The Super-Phonics' came about. Dominic Glover & his good friend Terry Washizu (A&R man at Pony Canyon Records Japan) were sat having a "few" pints of Guinness after an Incognito gig at the legendary Blue Note club.

"What would be great" says Terry, "is if someone did a record along the lines of the Dj Joey Negro's project 'The Sunburst Band' but with (if possible) more Funk, more Disco, more Groovin' & Movin' to that 70's beat and with the added twist of being more commercial in the sense of appealing to a wider range of people. Yet still retaining that 'Live' feel. You know, real musicians doing what they do best. Tearing the s**t out of their instruments with funkumental solos, bootytastic get down and boogie grooves, and pumping heart-stopping basslines."

"You know what?" says Dominic Glover (a.k.a Dj Deirdre the Dj in a dress). "That's sounds right up my strasse. I'm well in to the funk/disco and rare groove of the 70's and so are the other guys I work with in the studio. Plus, I reckon I could get plenty of the best musicians around to come down to the studio and work on this idea and record a wicked album for you. What do you reckon?"

"Go for it" said Terry.

And thus it came to pass that born into this world, a hybrid of Funk/Disco/House/ Rare Groove & tunes to make you move, was 'Interstellar', the new album from The Super-Phonics. Featuring the cream of the UK's Acid Jazz & Funk Scenes including Jan Kincaid & Simon Bartholomew (The Brand New Heavies), Jean Paul 'Bluey' Maunick (Incognito), Gary Crockett (The James Taylor Quartet), Nick Van Gelder (Jamiroquai), Snowboy (The Latin Section), Jim Hunt (Primal Scream, Richard Ashcroft), Mike Smith (Blur, Gorillaz) and many more

The Super-Phonics

“Elevate Our Minds” (538739)

From the same production and songwriting powerhouse that spawned The Sound Stylistics comes an altogether new and funkin release for 2008. Born in the same star-sign as Joey Negro's Sunshine Band project, the Super Phonics are all about invoking that classic soulful 70's disco sound, but to an updated house blueprint, with a little bit of soul and funkn thrown in for good measure. Performed by a stirling group of live musicians, including session players for Groove Armada, Incognito, US3, The James Taylor Quartet, The Brand New Heavies and The Herbaliser, you know the tunes are gonna be good to go! First up is their cover of the Linda Williams classic ''Elevate Our Minds'' - a timeless soul number that has graced the decks of many a Southport Weekender as well as being recently sampled on Ben Westbeech's drum and bass smoocher ''Get Closer''. The Super Phonics take it back to the raw, with this soul-drenched cover. Over on the flip, is the bands own composition ''Have A Good Time'', a jumping and pumping disco groover that should find favour on most open minded dancefloors.

The Super-Phonics - Interstellar

Freestyle Records

The cream of the UK's soul and funk musicians, most notably Snowboy, Jean Paul 'Bluey' Maunick and Jan Kincaid and Simon Bartholomew of The Brand New Heavies, have joined forces to create The Super-Phonics. 'Interstellar' opens with the appropriately titled 'P.A.R.T.Y' which perfectly sums up this set of feel-good disco/boogie cuts. There's really not a bad track throughout but pay special attention to the Chic influenced 'Dial L For Love', 'Better Try And See' and a great version of Linda Williams' classic 'Elevate Our Minds'. If you like Joey Negro's The Sunburst Band then this is for you.

Super-Phonics -- Interstellar . CD

Freestyle (UK), 2007. New Copy $19.99

A massively soulful bit of UK club -- from a combo with roots that go deeply into other parts of the London scene! The feel here is very much in the best mode of older work by Incognito or Brand New Heavies -- funky soul with a definite focus on the dancefloor, played in a style that has plenty of echoes of 70s classics -- but done in a cleaner, leaner mode too! Instrumentation is live and heavy on all tracks -- and most numbers are uptempo, but not in a housey way -- more in the mode of some of the best soul for the clubs during the post-disco years, with some elements of late 70s Fantasy Records work. Vocals are mostly by Lucy Jules, but include a few tunes by Nicol Thomson and Imaani -- and titles include a great remake of "Elevate Our Minds", plus "Have A Good Time", "Higher", "Everybody", "I'm Gonna Make You Want Me", "Better Try & See", "Dial L For Love", "Give A Little Love", and "Interstellar".

This selection of fine soulful and upbeat grooves is provided by a collection of stellar UK session players. Try the driving riff-laden 'Dial L For Love' or the funkier Clavinet led 'Give A Little Love'. Linda Williams' 'Elevate Our Minds' is given a flute driven jazzy re-working, whereas 'Interstellar' is an early 80's style British Jazz Funk dancer. 'Everybody' follows a similar theme (Incognito/Freeez influence). Highly recommended.

AND YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT MISS LUCY FOUND ON YOUTUBE!! YES, THAT'S RIGHT, A JAPANESE COVERS BAND COVERING OUR COVER OF LINDA WILLIAMS' 'ELEVATE OUR MINDS'. IT HAS TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED SO HERE YOU ARE. CHECK THIS SHIT OUT!!!
