Before the advent of MTV and the music video, The Shangri-Las songs, rich with sound effects and imagery were like mini teenage soap operas full with action, heartbreak and tragedy.

In 1964, The Shangri-Las came to the attention of producer George "Shadow" Morton, who arranged for a contract with the newly formed Red Bird label. Morton wrote and produced "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" a record that quickly established the group by climbing to the National Top Five. He next employed the writing services of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry to supply a follow up. Greenwich and Barry provided several girl-group hits for Phil Spector and Lesley Gore. Their contribution was "Leader Of The Pack", an instant classic that went straight to number one.
