sad accordions

sad accordions began as a project in houston between two friends, seth woods and ben lance, who shared a love of music while quickly realizing each other's talents in producing music. woods strength was in crafting songs in a somewhat traditional singer songwriter fashion; lance brought a unique style of guitar playing both passively sonic and almost delicate at times, while maintaining the ability to deliver when necessary.



after relocating to austin, additional members were added to the band, and they were originally billed as "Seth Woods and The Sad Accordians" (the misspelling of accordions was not realized until later, around the time that "Seth Woods" was dropped from the name). bass player lee kitchens had known ben and seth in houston, and began to make multiple trips from san marcus (where he was finishing school) each week for practice. lap steel genius peter kusek, recently uprooted from the washington dc area, was highly instrumental in pushing the band's sound and energy up a few notches. nathaniel gallagher joined the band shortly before the first show, and although with then-little experience behind the drums, his enthusiasm proved extremely valuable, and has shaped the band in ways that a seasoned drummer never could have achieved. pete eventually moved overseas with his newly wed wife, and more recently have settled in denton with their brand new daughter zoe. luckily, joy gallagher more than rounds out the lineup, taking on the multiple tasks of keyboard and guitar player.



the band recorded "A Bad Year For The Sharons" in 2006. the recording encompasses and expresses the bands love for the multitudes of sounds in music, with the use of brass instruments, violins, cello, clarinet, and various other effects. the songs drift seamlessly throughout the record, creating a daydream-influenced musical landscape that lasts for, what feels like, well-spent hours. the concept and craft of woods brought to life with the help of friends who share the love of music, and the love of making music and living life together, with no other intention than continuing to do so together as long as it feels right.



woods also performs as a solo artist under the moniker the whiskey priest, as well as playing bass in the austin band zookeeper. lance also does what he does best with the guitar in the bands zookeeper and the ovenbirds.
