First touching a turntable back in ’95, THE PHONOGRAFF (Phono to those that know) isn’t new to the DJ game by any means. He has been building and crafting his skills for over 14 years, rocking shows in night clubs back in the day before he was even legal. Now based in Vancouver, he started out in the small town of Kamloops, BC, where he built up his name by throwing and spinning at hip hop shows – put on, promoted and played by Phono himself. His first release was in 1999, an epic and highly acclaimed 4 track mixtape called “Train of Thought”. This heartfelt and skillfully compiled tape, which included a masterful blend of underground hip hop and early self-produced tracks, earned Phono respect in the hip hop community, and remains legendary to this day.
In 2006, with much anticipation, The PhonoGraff released a full-length album called “From the Bottom Up”. The critically acclaimed album (check the Georgia Straight review here:http://www.straight.com/article-106544/the-phonograff-the-volunteerz) was fully produced by Phono, who collected 16 of the most talented MCs and vocalists on the West Coast to create one of the most solid hip hop compilations of its kind. Some of the featured artists included Luckyiam.PSC from the Living Legends, Moka Only, Just B and Coco Love Alcorn (just to name a few), and if you haven’t heard it, you need to hear it. The PhonoGraff is not just a DJ or a producer: he is also a highly skilled turntablist that manipulates the decks in a tasteful – yet murderous – way. Some people even say he’s possessed. His highly advanced skills and high energy performance will keep you on the dance floor all night. Residing in Vancouver Canada for the past 10 years, The PhonoGraff has done countless shows opening for an impressive list of artists, including Blackalicious, Lady Sovereign, Alkaholiks, Jurassic 5, Digable Planets, Zion I, Living Legends, 50 Cent, Pigeon John, Maestro Fresh Wes, Sixtoo, Swollen Members and countless others…
Phono has recently stepped up his game: he is not only still DJing and producing hip hop, but producing and spinning dubstep, combining heavy bass with scratching skills in a way that few, if any, DJs can match. Dubstep was a natural progression for Phono, stemming from his love of roots reggae and dub music: he’s never killed parties harder. He recently released his first Dubstep mix CD called Sound Proof, a 60 minute, seriously well-blended ride through some of his favourite dubstep tunes to date – including 3 original and unreleased tracks. The PhonoGraff, in my opinion, is one of Canada's most underrated and talented DJs to date. Be sure to keep a close eye on this guy.
