"Introspective, intuitive, narcotic narratives entwined with orchestral, sweeping soundscapes that recall the most alluring parts of Mazzy Star and Isobel Campbell's musical aesthetic. A pensive Melbourne collective who continue to soak up the ethereal vibes of the the universe and present them to us in the form of mystical song" – INPRESS
Humming along to the corrugated iron reverb and sewing machine ghosts of Brunswick's derelict textile mills, Marita Dyson & Stuart Flanagan formed The Orbweavers in 2006. Drawing on a love of history, natural sciences, museums and libraries, the pair began writing songs on scrap catalogue cards by day, and playing in the kitchen by night.
With help from good friends Paddy Mann (Grand Salvo) on bass, Dave Leggatt (Mercury Spectres) on drums and Daniel Aulsebrook on trumpet to complete the quintet, they set about recording at the local 5th Brunswick Scout Hall.
2009 saw the release of debut album Graphite & Diamonds, a dark and dulcet collection of 11 songs straight from the abandoned knitting mills of their neighbourhood: a world of chiming pins and needle electric guitar, haunted violin, runaway vines, mystery, and the Moon. The album's closing track Diving Bell, went on to become the basis of balearic electro-dreamer Faux Pas' single Silver Line.
After a brief tour of Japan in May 2010, they released double A-side single Japanese Mountains/Spotswood from their forthcoming second album Loom. A tribute to Japanese volcanoes and the historic Spotswood Sewerage Pumping Station; the release has mysteriously captured local attention. Mournful nostalgia is in the water.
Loom is set for release on Mistletone in mid 2011.
"If you have a yearning to plunge into some intense daydreaming, you should definitely have a soundtrack to achieve this to. Graphite and Diamonds is that soundtrack. Atmospheric and spooky, if this album was a thing, it would be a ladybeetle with long eyelashes, knitting a shawl of silver and gold." Jenny O'Keefe, CD reviewer for Cherrie, JOY 94.9, PBS Breakfast.
Graphite & Diamonds can be purchased from POLYESTER, MISSING LINK, GREVILLE RECORDS, SUN BOOKSHOP, SEDONIA or online from itunes or directly from our website.
