This is a love story of fighters. Strong wills and rebel hearts converging to bring a fearless edge to music.
They met at a 24 hour international party (DuBeau Hostel) in Flagstaff, Arizona. Sarah had found the place whilst traveling to the 'wild west' of America on a youthful impulse to leave behind her lot in England. Her escape was successful, when, finding it impossible to get free from the Hostel's drunken clutches, she never checked out and ended up running the place.
Tom, hearing of the merits of Du Beau life, came down from the Northwest in search of sunshine and a life change. For eight years he had been playing in 'The Kind', an intense, fast, tight flamenco guitar duo. It didn't bring home quite enough bacon, so side jobs with the mexican mafia brought in the rest.
The 24 hour party needed a 'maintenance man' and Sarah and Tom struck an instant friendship.
Happy to lay the complexities of the guitar duo to the side, Tom rekindled some past influences (AC/DC, Townes Van Zandt, Metallica) to teach Sarah the drums. Despite her deep seated Brit-pop, rave music roots, she discovered that she was also a rocker at heart.
As they carved their own version of intense, unadulterated rock it became clear that any standard guitar just wouldn't do. So, in true revolutionary form, BlackSmith employed rebel luthier, Carl Hamilton, to build a nylon string, electric guitar that would withstand Tom's ferocious abuse. And so, the Classical Smith was born.
Five years in the forging and the BlackSmith sound has come to fruition with bold confidence in the form of their debut album 'Camel Clutch'.
