Loose Digits

Birthed in Spring|06, THE LOOSE DIGITS are 5 individuals who hail from all corners of what our 5th grade geography book told us is the continental US. Converging on a neighborhood bluegrass jam, these musicians quickly found a common tie uncommon to most musicians in the area: A mutual love for dynamic arrangement/performance, coupled with a humility to listen to each other (and not quit their day jobs).



Mike Canney, recovering from a childhood of bluegrass, writes songs on mandolin that could be arranged for a symphony. His creation Solstice on the Five Finger Discount EP reveals his interest in melody driven rhythms, which lean on dynamics for delivery.



Greg Maass' contributions on dobro pull from a tenure in bluegrass and amazing vegetarian cooking. He’s a staple in Seattle Bluegrass, via previous bands such as Who's Driving, and continually offers creative phrasing on an instrument that can't hide behind frets.



Matt Herron no longer spites his mother's insistence on childhood bluegrass exposure (CBE), which in turn has given him a fiddle voice unmistakable across the noisiest of venues. His versatility is displayed with seamless voicing from many styles.



Loose Digits luckily caught Jim Marsh by way of one of his many passions, upright bass. Formerly a percussion performer and teacher, his exposure to life and commitment to a downbeat keep things rooted yet interesting.



Eli West’s guitar style is almost as memorable as the quantity of strings he breaks, while his vocals help balance an otherwise instrument-heavy arrangement. He blames a liberal arts education for suggesting a bluegrass band cover Billy Bragg and even Horace Silver.



Shows have included Wintergrass 2008, Northwest String Summit 07, NW Folklife 07/08, and many venues such as The Tractor Tavern in Seattle. You can always catch them every other Sunday night at their home base, Pies and Pints, in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle.
