The Houdini Complex

An uninhibited and relentless pursuit for unique music brought the cast of The Houdini Complex together in early 2007. New doors were opened into the obscure and unique sounds of fusion jazz-metal, a genre that then and even now is in its fetal stage, and only a glimmer in the eye of the media. Its sounds are dense and complex, both dissonant and familiar, and unravels new textures and colors with each listen.



The exploration doesn't end with the written music, but also flourishes with the performance. Jaded with the stale approach many bands and musicians follow, the concept of reciting note-for-note the passages of a pre-calculated thought, The Houdini Complex instead follows the example of bands like Mars Volta, King Crimson, and Primus who attempt to bring something unique to every performance, bring the songs to life, but still remain true to the original thought expressed in the song.



At this point, The Houdini Complex has only uncovered the tip of a massive iceberg. The songs of popular radio may all sound the same, but there is a wealth unique and relevant ideas waiting to be explored with this medium, stay tuned.
