"UNION GRANDE" - THE BAND SADLY SPLIT IN SEPTEMBER 2007 AFTER 2.5YRS. THIS PAGE IS DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE WHO PLAYED WITH, SAW & ENJOYED THE GRAND UNION MUSIC SHOW
The Grand Union Music Show was formed by Ray & Tim. They have been friends since 1999 but initially teamed up musically mid 2005 to record some of Ray's songs. Both have prior experience gigging, touring & recording - including TV appearances, session work with top UK guitar magazines and have prior record / CD releases. They started gigging in early 2006, with Chris joining about 3 gigs in. Chris was originally asked to join as a percussionist but showed up to the gig with a 6ft tall 1930s double bass. The bongos never made it to a gig!
The band released a self titled CD in July 2006 featuring our firm live favourites Back Together, Black Water & Best of You. The CD was sold at gigs & sold out. The follow up at Xmas 2006 was the ambitious 21trk Union Grande, delibrately done in a style to emulate those classic 70s double albums. The band were working on the follow up, a 12 trk album of all original material, titled Funky Hobos.
Ray sang & played the guitar. He had been a songwriter for several years. His influences are wide & varied but they include everything from rock to country. Tim initially joined as the bass player but quickly moved into the role of guitar and mandolin. He played banjo, lap steel, harmonica & many other instruments on the recordings. Chris played drums on the studio versions, in addition to his main role on bass but also ventured out on the ukellele as well.
The band mainly played around the Watford Area & enjoyed regular slots at The Sportsman in Croxley & Owlsworld events. The band rarely rehearsed and had a laid back vibe onstage. Often joined by guest musicians such as Banjo Bill, Romanie, Mr. Owl, Arfur (Sitting Ducks) as well as Cliff, Mark or Alan who guest on drums on a regular basis.
The band were very heavily into home recording, using whatever is at hand to make the music groove & roll The Grand Union Music Show released 2 now hard to find CDs so feel free to download the tunes & enjoy the band's memory.
Check the above link for bootleg footage of the 'Union live at the Rickmansworth Canal Festival, shot through a hand held video cam at a May 2007 show featuring the band, Cliff on drums, Romanie on fiddle & Banjo Bill as Banjo Bill. An Owlsworld Production in association with Minky Knights - for maximum listening enjoyment STOP the music player or better yet, come to a gig yourself!
