The Gospel Connection's primary goal is to spread the word of the Gospel through the ministry of song. There are many ministries that can be used to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Singing however is the one that the Gospel Connection feels they were called by God to do. By that, it's essential for them to do their best to project through music those things which the Lord has anointed them to do for Him.

The Gospel Connection was originally founded in the Spring of 1999 at a Youth Lock-In at High Ridge Baptist Church located in Martinsville, Virginia where Pastor Ray T. Arrington presides. The original founders of the group are Brandon Penn, Roger Epps Jr., Jamison Wimbush, Torrey Via, and Andre Matthews. This group of young men had a vision that is still prominent today to sing not for fame but that God be glorified. Those who first witnessed The Gospel Connection were astonished that for such young teenage boys, they sounded like they had been singing together for years. The group suffered a major setback in November 2001 when Roger Epps Jr. and Brandon Penn were involved in a near-fatal accident. Brandon came out with minor injuries however; Roger was on the brink of death. From his severe injuries, Roger also was in a comatose state for nearly a month. Glory be to God, Roger miraculously recovered nearly 3 months after the accident.

The group has shared the same stage and been influenced by the following artists: The Canton Spirituals, The Williams Brothers, Keith Wonderboy Johnson, Luther Barnes, F.C. Barnes, Slim Hunt & The Supreme Angels, Doc McKenzie & The Spiritual Hi-Lites, George Dean & The Gospel Four, The Racy Brothers, and Larnell Starkey & The Spiritual Seven.
