The First Seven was born out of a passion for the groove; from a love of dirty, heart-stopping rock and roll; and from a deep understanding of the need for people to shake their ass, git down and feel the funk.

Stephen Marks (vocals, guitar) and Gaz Walmsley (drums), prominent figures on the Birmingham music scene for some years, had in recent times become disillusioned with the state of the music industry. They were looking for inspiration, something new.

Enter Pete Murphy (guitar), who had stepped away from the music scene back in 2005, lost his head and his muse, and spent a couple of years in hibernation. Mad at the world, mad at himself, and with no real interest in the current climate of forgettable mediocre rock pap, he had no idea what the next chapter of his life held in store.

Pete was living out of town, but through some hot-ass twist of fate, during the week that he moved back to Birmingham came the phone call from Stephen that would change lives, seal fates, and secure the foundation of the most exciting rock and roll band the West Midlands has produced since Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward tore the Western world a new one.

They talked about an intense, raw sound overflowing with catchy-yet-twisted melodies. They talked about the funk of Sly Stone and Betty Davis, the soul of Stevie Wonder and Aretha, the rock and roll groove of QOTSA and James Hall/Pleasure Club married as in some unholy union to the dark undertones of the Smiths and the attitude of The Almighty. They talked about how audiences might leave a show not necessarily remembering every song they heard, but how their lives will be enriched because of the way it made them feel. They talked about groove dripping off the ceiling, the walls, and from every open pore.

Early rehearsals in a small, sweaty room produced mile-wide grins, a vibe harder and faster than a freight train, and a slew of tunes denser than a black hole.

The final piece of the puzzle came in the shape of the irrepressible Muzz and his beloved bass guitar, Frank. Another prominent figure on the Birmingham scene, Muzz gelled instantly with Gaz to create the driving rhythm section dreamed up in the band’s manifesto.

Stephen, Gaz, Pete, and Muzz are The First Seven. See them live, as they endeavor to move your mind, your soul, and your hips.
