Sometime in November of 2007 The Dirty Mac Blues Band was formed. The name has significance on many levels. Dirty describes the sound as well as subject matter in much of the lyrics. Mac refers to Terry Mackie, the band's over the top front woman, lyricist and vocalist. It is also an irreverent poke at the classic blues rock many music fans hold sacred. From the start band decided it would not be your parents blues band.
The seeds of this band were sown in the Boston area blues jam scene where Matt Robinson and "Bashful" Bob Ross spent countless years looking for like minded people to play with. After spending a year jamming with Johnny Hujol, Bob and Matt were introduced to his singer friend Terry Mackie. The first question Terry was asked was "What songs does she know?". She replied "None". What could have been a problem turned into a blessing. It was at that point that a songwriting partnership began.
About a year followed with the four playing in different projects and combinations. While attending a jam at Johnny D's, Matt and Bob discovered Lorraine "Miss L" Kleiner and it was then the first version of the Dirty Mac Blues Band was formed. The lineup remained the same until June 2008 when Johnny moved on to pursue his many other interests.
Late 2008 found the band in a studio in Salem New Hampshire recording what would become the Victory Bar album. Between ice storms, power outages and sewer back ups, the recordings were done quickly and the old fashioned way on 16 tracks of analog tape. In April 2009 the recordings were self released on a 13 track CD and as a digital download.
After going through a series of harmonica players (most notably Mike Ableson, who recorded with the band on the Victory Bar album), the band found "Gentleman" Josh Nathan in April of 2009. Lorraine exited the band in June that same year. This was after months of grueling auditions for a drummer until the seat was finally filled by Mark "Yo Sam" Bell.
The band hopes to re-enter the studio in 2011 and record a follow up to Victory Bar. Until then they continue to gig regularly. Their "Simple, Raw and Dirty Blues" coming to a town near you soon.
