The Canaries started, as most great bands do, in a basement. Long-time friends and musical collaborators Frank Sinclair (vocals/piano/guitar) and Mike Zikovitz (guitar) felt the need to start kicking out the jams. With nowhere else to go, they went downstairs. After a long search East-coast bad-ass and radio guru Dan Misener was added on bass guitar and the unstoppable Isaac Klein stepped in behind the kit, bringing his raw style and extensive experience to The Canaries sound. Not long after, a foul-smelling gas leak in the basement had two surprisingly-positive effects: it christened the band with their name and forced them to look for a proper rehearsal space.

The Canaries play addictive indie roots-rock influenced by everything from Lou Reed to Thrush Hermit to Tom Waits. Singer/songwriter Frank Sinclair writes with a passionate honesty that, when combined with his warm, idiosyncratic delivery, has that much sought-after ability to connect with the audience. Whether it’s a full-on rocker like “Beauty Collides”, a heartfelt country ballad like “Try Like You Mean It”, or a pop-country-prog mash up like “That Love Falls Thing”, Frank’s songs and voice, flushed out by the band, never fail to keep the listener enthralled.

In January of 2007 the Canaries went into the studio to record their first EP, a nine-song effort titled “Beauty Collides”. The CD captures the breadth of their songwriting ability while remaining a cohesive package. Their Toronto CD release party drew sell-out crowds. The Canaries infectious roots-pop sound is catching on. They have no plans to return to the basement.
