The Black Coral hails from Chicago, a city that has impacted the music world for the past 15 years with major artists from the Smashing Pumpkins, R Kelly, Common, Kayne West, Disturbed, Ok Go, Chevelle and Fall Out Boy to name just a few. The Black Coral seems poised to be the next act to join this impressive line-up. The four- piece displays pure melodic sensibilities along with irreverent attitude. According to Andy Stafford “the dual vocal approach allows us to express emotions lyrically and musically just not possible without having two singers in the band”. Kevin and Andy not only share vocal duties, but writing and guitar duties as well. It is precisely this approach that brings uniqueness to the band that other bands lack. “We are two singers acting as one and I think it’s because we both play guitar that it is so natural” says Kevin. The rhythm section of Trent and Buccia is the backbone of the band allowing the songs to veer off into different directions but constantly anchored by Trent’s big beats and Buccia’s powerful bass lines.

The musical influences that each member brings to the band help shape its sound. “Its different from any other band I have ever been in, we feel totally free to try anything” says Trent the ever energetic drummer. The freedom to try anything is evident everywhere in the band’s music. From the fast tempo in your face “She's Violent” to the dark melancholy of “Someday”, the Black Coral takes you on a journey of exhilaration and despair and throughout this experience you can’t stop singing every lyric.

While the band’s musical influences help shape their sound, it’s their personal experiences that the listener hears and feels in every lyric. “I was going through a tough breakup during the writing and recording of the songs and I used them as an outlet to express what I was feeling at the time” according to Kevin. The Black Coral at its essence is a band focused on writing songs that express all the human emotions. “In the end what we try to capture is the rawness of human existence with all its flaws and present that in a 3 minute song that you can hum to” laughs Kevin.
