It is well known that there is a certain craftsmanship to song writing. To master the language of emotion, convey its message with words and tell a story with music is a fine crafted balance. Melbourne artist Ben Smith has been mastering this art for years.
After having lived and travelled the streets of London in his late teens/early 20’s, Bens music eventually bought him home to Australia. He has absorbed the surroundings and experiences of his life, which he translates into songs that speak about life, love, mistakes and all the beauty and pain that comes with them! There is something beautiful about the concoction of poetry, acoustic guitar, transcending vocals and honest lyrics that create the earthy, soulful, blues & roots feel that is Ben Smiths music.
In 2006, Ben released the “Whiskey Sunset” EP (2006, Dust Devil Music) followed by his debut album “Sometimes Always Never” (2007, Dust Devil Music). This year, Ben is spoiling us with his new, self produced EP, “The Devil on my Shoulder”. His work showcases a true artist. One who not only knows his audience, but knows his music, his guitar and more than anything – himself. Within these tracks, Ben shows us ourselves – heartbreaking, honest, aware, raw and beautiful.
Expanding upon his Victorian home turf, numerous trips inter-state have also yielded responsive punter favour and as the momentum grows, so does the audience numbers. Ben Smith’s loyal fan base stretches across all state boarders. Being based in Melbourne, Ben draws a local and energetic crowd. Being in the crowd at a Ben Smith show is a promise that your lungs will be expanded, legs stretched and your body will be moving. These are tunes no part of you can stay still to.
Ben’s versatility as an artist is evident through his performances, both in solo and band mode. Joined by Bass guitarist Nick Ohlson, skinsman Timmy O’Connor and Saxophonist Billy Abbott, these artists are transformed into the Ben Smith Band. Nick brings a unique rhythm to the table and proves that there is little in the world to envy the beats of a well-played bass. Timmy has been Ben’s ‘right hand man’ since the early days, and it shows in the beautiful unison amongst the music. His instruments are merely an extension of himself, and with the ease that only a true genius can apply, we are treated to his smooth sounds. To compliment the bands melody and vibe, Billy transfixes you with his soulful sounds on the sax.
