I wish I could say that this great songwriter is a "living" legend, however Blaze Foley a.k.a. Michael David Fuller was killed in Austin, TX in February of 1989, by one single gun shot, at the young age of 39. He was trying to protect an elderly friend. February 1st, 2009 will be 20 years since his death.and his music lives on! "Living" legend , no, but legend he is, long after his death. Not only was he one of Texas' best songwriters, he was a great singer/songwriter, musician, guaranteed, and his "heart" was bigger than Texas. His songs will soothe you, rile you, move you in one way or another, and his deep sensitive voice cuts straight to the heart. Blaze Foley is here to stay.not only in song, but in spirit. 3 years before Blaze's death, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson recorded the song that Blaze is most recognized for to date, "If I Could Only Fly", a song that Merle Haggard said was one of the best songs he had heard in 15 years. The same song has been recorded by Merle Haggard alone, on his 2000 release album "If I Could Only Fly". Again, same song covered by Joe Nichols on his album "Real Things" in 2007. Lyle Lovett covered and released "Election Day" on his 2003 album, "My Baby Don't Tolerate". John Prine covered Blaze's "Clay Pigeons" on his "Fair & Square" album, 2005. Countless other indie artists have recorded some Blaze tunes. These are but a few of the best songs that Blaze left us. Though his catalog is small, consisting of 60 songs, there are yet many great songs that need to be heard by all music lovers of the world! Hope you enjoy the listening, here on this page, and elsewhere. Blaze Foley is singing in alot of placesin alot of hearts. Sing on Blaze!!!

Blaze Foley the Duct Tape Messiah had it’s first official screening

On November 21st, 2008, at the Paso Nobles Film Festival in California. Better yet, is the fact that Kevin Triplett submitted the documentary on December 12th, 2008 for the SXSW Film Festival, which will be in March of 2009, in Austin, TX. Wow, I know Kevin has a great sense of victory, finally, after ten years of putting this project together. I commend him for his dedication

And his diligence, for never giving up. Much appreciation to Kevin Triplett! Much

Love to Kevin.

The final and official title of the documentary is Drunken Angel: The Legend of Blaze Foley. It will be premiering at SXSW Film Festival on March 18th, at the Convention Center in Austin, TX, at 7:00pm. Hope to see you there. There will be other screenings throughout the year, could be somewhere near you. There will be a screening in my small town of Athens, Texas on Saturday, April 4th, along with some very talented singer/songwriters who cover Blaze songs oftenand very well.

The documentary will also be screening in Galveston, Texas on May 29th, Gurf Morlix will be playing, who I believe is and was one of Blaze's very best friends, and his music is great!! I am certainly planning to be there, hope some of you are too.

I will post new screenings as they come. If you would like to arrange for a screening in your town, send me a message.

Living in the Woods in a Tree (Remembering Blaze Foley) A memoir written by Sybil Rosen was released back in October, and has had some great reviews. This is great story, very well written, well worth reading. Sybil has been traveling to a number of different states for book signings, and will be in Austin TX for a book signing at Book People, on February 1st, 2009, the 20 year anniversary of Blaze’s death. This book can be purchased online at www.amazon.com, or www.unt.edu/untpress/livinginthewoodsinatree . It can also be found at your local book stores, such as Barnes and Noble.
