Take the Boys is what would happen if Etta James and Sublime took a road trip from Canada to Venezuela. The trio play their own style that rolls rock, soul, rocksteady, and reggae in with old school pop sensibilities; songs with honest lyrics and memorable melodies.
Take the Boys can to life in early 2006, when founding members Angela Boismenu and Brian Choi chose to leave a six-piece funk band to pursue a more meaningful musical project. The decision came about after the sudden death of Angela's father; giving perspective to life, and giving birth to a more mature sound. In the fall, Venezuelan native (via Ottawa) Rafael Rodriguez replaced the original drummer, injecting his personal flair and bang-on timing to the trio.
In early 2007, after much discussion and debate, the band decided to take a leap of faith to record a full-length studio album as their first recording. After shopping around they decided to go with Ottawa's Little Chicago Studios and producer Tim Greencorn (Feist, Wilco, Stars). Armed with little more than the stubborn pursuit of a quality sound, the band made countless trips up and down the 417 highway for over a year. The result: an album with songs about family, social consciousness and self reflection rooted in booty-shaking groove; mastered by renown engineer, Joao Carvalho (Sam Roberts, Hedley, Alexis On Fire, Protest The Hero).
Brian left the Take the Boys line up in late spring of '09, a difficult time for everyone. After a lot of searching they found their man. That man was Shian Ramjohn. A true blue old school boy with Trinidad roots and TONS of skill, Shian brought back the groove that was left silent in the absence of Brian. Since his addition the group the band has been working on new material for their follow-up album, as well as perfecting the art of "The Live Show".
Since their formation Take the Boys has developed a loyal following from their local Montreal gigs at such venues as Club Soda, Cafe Campus and Sala Rossa, and have shared the stage with such names as The Slackers, Westbound Train, Mad Caddies, Chris Murray and The Johnstones. Their music has also been getting airplay on local and international radio stations as well as multiple internet stations. They are a featured artist in the '08 fall edition of BOBBi magazine, and as well as on the band services website Bandzoogle. Take the Boys has played events such as the 2008 Grey Cup, the Smiths Falls Railway Festival, the Montreal High Lights Festival, charity shows for the Montreal Parkinson’s Disease Fund and Procure Walk of Courage, and rocked the stage at the '09 Montreal Ska Festival.
