In a world where there is always more than one way to look at something, where there is always a counterpoint to the surface, Surreal Effect has made their mark not only as a representative of this idea but as promoters of it. This band, based in Fond du Lac, WI, is a creative, unique, and eye-opening group consisting of one of the un-likeliest combinations of people in music. One would hardly expect a blues and classical guitar enthusiast, an alternative/grunge rock devotee, a 1960s rock zealot, and a metal fanatic to be able to create music together, but over twenty songs, two years, and many recordings, contests, and shows later, it is apparent that it is possible.
In the summer of 2004, after having all played together in various forms, lead guitarist Levi Harris, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Shane English, bassist/vocalist Brian Harper, and drummer Aaron Bergman convened at La Casa de Harris to begin working on material for the band that would become Surreal Effect. Only sophomores in high school, the foursome began exploring their diverse musical tastes to form a sound that is revolutionary and new because of the sum of its parts, yet also recognizable and sonically pleasing because of the individual parts. This quality to their music provides a little something for everyone. One song alone contains catchy alternative sounds, swing, introspective balladry, and thunderous rock (time changes and some lyrics from a famous nursery rhyme included!) The fact that the four are able to write music together is a testament to their abilities and persistence to their craft. The group's lyrics are also surprisingly mature, considering they are still in high school. Whether it be political protest, religious views, love, anger, jealousy, beautiful poetic phrasing, confusion, or psychedelic imagery, the lyrical content of their songs are relatable to many people and are to be listened to as such.
While the overall sound of Surreal Effect is the most important factor, each individual member brings their own sound and strengths to the table. The fluid and incredibly fast lead guitar work of Levi Harris never ceases to amaze fans at each show and lifts each song to a higher level. Shane English's passionate rhythm guitar work made up of riffs that refuse to get out of your head along with the brilliant honesty in his vocal work are the centerpiece of the band. Brian Harper's melodic bass playing and intensely heavy vocals bring a fervent and alternative statement to the band. And Aaron Bergman's tight, grooving drum work always fits perfectly with the rest of the music and is undoubtedly the backbone of the entire band.
As for the future, Surreal Effect has its eyes on taking their music as far as possible and continuing to evolve their constantly-growing sound. Each new musical peak provides the challenge of reaching another, a feat which they will never stop reaching towards and will never stop enjoying.
