Music is in Bruce Gainsford’s blood. Born in New Zealand he was learning to play the piano and guitar as he was learning to talk. Bruce bought his first electric guitar on Sunset Boulevard at age 12. The acquisition of a 4 track followed closely after and his fate was sealed: A Life of Music.
London called and Bruce joined a band, Vega4, which was quickly snapped up by Sony/BMG and released two albums, enjoying numerous world tours and worldwide airplay. Their single "Life Is Beautiful" from the second album “You and Others” featured heavily on tv shows and films (Greys Anatomy, One Tree Hill, My Sisters Keeper, Streetdance 3D) while staying in the top 30 in the US Radio Charts for 12 weeks.
Vega4 captured the attention of uber-DJ Paul Van Dyk resulting in a collaboration track – the hugely successful 'Time of Our Lives' which topped worldwide dance charts. Snapped up by Paul as his live touring guitarist, Bruce was bitten by the electronic music bug and when the band eventually went their separate ways he began honing his production skills under the moniker Styrafoamkid.
Under Styrafoamkid, Bruce continued honing his production skills on remixes and soon featured on numerous Ministry of Sound & Cream Compilations as well as having his tracks played by DJ’s like Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, & Markus Schulz among others.
Production work naturally goes hand in hand with DJing and the last couple of years has seen Bruce steadily ascend the ranks of the London dance scene playing at London’s top venues including Brixton Academy, Koko, & Ministry of Sound, supporting the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Eric Prydz and Mark Knight to name a few.
As a DJ Bruce loves to explore the deeper, darker side of electronic music, throwing in a healthy dose of his own edits, ensuring his sets have a unique flavour every time.
Late 2010 saw Bruce complete his first solo artist album “Stunt Double” which will be released in 2011. He also made the decision to change to the moniker Gainsford as an umbrella for all of his production and performance work.
Bruce is currently busy working on exciting collaborations with some very talented vocalists and producers. Watch this space for some storming new releases.
