It was while working together in the Bay Area that Chris Wieber and Kent Brisley met and became mortal enemies. Frequenting dodgy pubs and guitar shops during extended lunch hours, the two quickly realized that their musical ambitions greatly outweighed their desire to sit on bar stools or in cubes staring at computer screens. After a few promising jam sessions, unable to find that '68 Les Paul Custom, let alone parking spaces, they moved to Los Angeles - a city for which guitarist Brisley was no fish out of water, having spent years there recording with close friend and former band mate, Danny Carey of Tool. Welcoming the guitarists to the City of Angels, Carey offered up his cousin Paul Vilas Jones to play bass. As for a drummer, they needed to look no further than undisputed cymbal king, and mountain dew aficionado Gerry Porter. All that was needed now was the 6-octave vocal range of Randy Reeman, not to mention keyboard phenom from "The Lawrence Welk Orchestra". A grueling, yet productive six months later, from the murky depths of their rehearsal space, STURGEON was spawned.
Sturgeon draws its inspiration from an eclectic mix of music and art. They often compose in nontraditional tunings and odd timing signatures that, occasionally, makes for some very unique train wrecks.
