Enter Steve Liriks, a talented, crafty, and gifted individual . Steve Liriks is a California artist that was born into a musical family. His Dad, Herbert McMullen, was a music major at Kent State. Herbert McMullen was always involved in music throughout his career as a teacher and when his kids (Andrew "Andy Mackk" McMullen and Matthew "Steve Liriks" McMullen) were born, he devoted his time to get them interested in music. Steve would begin rapping at the age of five with his older brother and cousins. When he became seven, he began to write his own rhymes and play the piano. Treating music as a hobby, his first true passion was to play Basketball and go to the NBA. At the age of fifteen, however, he realized his passion for Basketball had died out in exchange for Music. Music is his true calliing.
Influences range from Nas to Pink Floyd to Santigold to Portishead, and anything in between. With an uncanny knack to harmonize and sing on tracks as well, the added firepower and versatility to Steve's lyrical, vocal, and production arsenal will make him a force to reckon with the years to come.
Liriks hits us with his latest project and “Coming of Age” tale, Lazy Boy Syndrome. It explores the question every young adult faces with what to do with your life post-High School. Everyone that experiences growing pains, can relate to Lazy Boy. Lazy Boy is an intervention about pushing forward and not conforming to our generations ways of being sloths, non-productive, and always trying to find the easy way to Success. It is about breaking this curse by improving your situation, not being depressed, and letting the days slip by with no progress. It’s also explores relationships with the opposite sex as well. The sacrifices and balances one has to make in order to achieve goals while trying to convince that special person to have trust and faith. Hopefully they will be there for you as try to you make it to that end of the tunnel.
On Lazy Boy Syndrome, Liriks enlists production from talented out-of-country producers including Kalifornia Kurt (Austria), Jobe (Paris), Lunice (Canada), Mr. Marr (Canada), Nino (Spain), Crackazat (UK), Hudson Mohawke (UK), and back to USA with fellow MHW label mates, The Specialists. Featured guests include DJ Chong Wizard, Dana La Rock, The Specialists, Tyrice C. (Steve’s Engineer as well), Mr. Mirac (Austria), and DJ Chris Fader (Austria), who blesses “On Another Note” with some very Primo-esque scratches! Liriks went this route to have an encompassing Global Sound, rather than just the typical run-of-the-mill sound of his environment. Lazy Boy is a nuclear mind meld of electro-synth, funky drums-n-snares, dramatic horns, bouncy grooves, and feelings of so smooth.
