Sweet and soulful is the sound of alt-country’s Steff Mahan. With a voice that is pure and powerful and lyrics that are heart-crafted and rock-solid, it’s hard not to get hooked on the emotional truth that comes out of this born songwriter’s mouth.
After a year long U.S. tour to promote her debut album, the Nashville-based artist released her second Lounge Hound Records project titled “42.50”. Produced by Michael Grimes, “42.50” is a compelling collection of people, places, and stories from life on the road that rocks with the talents of Will Kimbrough, Brother Henry, and J.D. Wilkes of the Legendary Shack Shakers.
Steff’s self-titled debut album and her second release, 42.50, both garnered national attention, creating a coast-to-coast fan base from LA to New York. It was famed New York DJ Jim Kerr who said “you’ll soon be hearing the name Steff Mahan” during a live performance and interview on Sirius Satellite Radio. Billboard’s Mike Gionet called Steff’s mix of rock, roots, folk and country “an entertaining can’t-miss performance.”
Steff’s third album, Never a Long Way Home, released to rave reviews in December 2009. The Colorado Spring’s Independent declared, “Withoug resorting to artifice or cliches, Steff Mahan has a gift for writing songs that sneak up on you and, before you know it, get you teary-eyed.” Wildy’s Wolrd proclaimed this third album as “…her best to date.” Itunes may have said it best with their review of the album as “a song collection displaying both craft and heart, sung by an artist who wins extra points for her honesty.”
Nashville’s The City Paper says Steff is “simply a wicked cool singer/songwriter,” and The Nashville Rage adds her “heartfelt delivery has a charm all its own.”
Meanwhile, Asheville, North Carolina’s Mountain Xpress believes that Steff’s “pop-country sound and candid lyrics make (her) a sure bet.”
A definite highlight for Steff was in Nashville when respected WRLT music director Keith Coes asked Steff to play at the stations annual birthday party where she opened for Patty Griffin.
In St. Louis, Linda Serafini of radio station KDHX says Steff’s interview and live performance “had the phones ringing off the hook!”
Succeeding largely on her own terms, Steff plays music because she loves it and because she wants to share this love with others. It’s exactly this desire which allows her to captivate an audience; to take them on an intimate tour of her music; to stay long after her shows talking to everyone; to call nearly every person she meets a friend.
