Portland, Oregon-based Soulphonic Soundsystem is a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Chauncey Canfield and dj/producer DJ Santo that combines jazz breaks and broken beats with live instrumentation including horns, Rhodes and a really sick dose of latin flavor. Their debut album, "Volume One" featured guest vocals from Geri Lightwood (Supreme Beings of Leisure), Valida (past credits include work with John Beltran), and Angelique. Music from the album has been featured on HBO's Entourage and CSI:NY and tracks have been licensed for the Plush II compilation and hand-selected by Karim Rashid for inclusion his "Plaza Magazine Mix," amongst others.

Flavorpill LA says: "Broken beats, Latin rhythms, jazzy horns, and sultry lounge vibes all co-exist brilliantly in the Soulphonic Soundsystem's anything-goes universe."

Their debut full-length CD "Volume One" was released May 2007 and included bonus remixes from their second 12" (2006) by Fort Knox Five, Austria's Ed Royal and DJ Enne, Ben Mitchell of Mitchell & Dewbury (UK) fame

On Nov. 19 2008 The beat-slinging duo unleashed their latest digital-only single featuring remixes from some of their favorite producers. NYC's Turntables On The Hudson-founder Nickodemus (ESL, Wonderwheel) jump starts the sitar driven "Eastern Market" with a fierce four-on-the-floor tabla driven beat, while Germany's Deela (Switchstance Records) lays the perfect backbeat for Valida's vocals on "The One" to move the track from the headphones to the floor. For the finishing touch, Brighton's Will Sumsuch (Latenight Lounging) takes a trip into abstract terrain with his interpretation of the previously unreleased "Miso."

DJ Santo has DJ'd alongside and opened up for artists such as Bugz in Attic, Truby Trio, Bebel Gilberto, Nicola Conte, Thievery Corporation, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Turntables on the Hudson and many others. Their weekly LA Party Transistor Lounge was voted Best Space Age Oasis OASIS in the LA Weekly. DJ Santo was voted, best club DJ in the LA Alternative Press Readers Poll in 2003. DJ Santo also hosts the weekly Portland radio show Something Different (which is available on demand in the Giant Step player) and serves up two mixes a month for KEXP's Mo'Glo Program which is featured on WNYE in New York. Canfield is the producer for both programs. While the duo's radio and studio work has made live shows a rarer occurrence, a recent performance by DJ Santo at Portland's acclaimed MusicfestNW was sold out.

Chauncey Canfield was named SPIN magazine's "Best Unsigned Band" of 1998 and co-founded DC-based jazztronic trio Aubergine 3 in 1999. His track, "Bergamot" was the grand prize winner in Shure Electronics' "DJ Biology" contest at Winter Music Conference 2003.

Together, they've toured and played a number of West Coast dates with additional live musicians both headlining and opening for acts including Mark Farina, Diplo, Turntables on the Hudson, Fort Knox Five, and Bugz in the Attic.
