Sonya Crites Professional, Capable, Sincere, Dependable, Amazing They are all words that have at one time or another been used to describe the musical abilities and performance skills of Sonya Crites, who is a full time performer.
As with so many Appalachian youth, Sonyas love for music began at church and at home. At home, her mother would sing with her, and soon, she would be requested to perform at church. When asked, Sonya always credits her mom as her greatest influence, which sums up the character of the young lady who takes great pride in delivering performances that are sincere and heartfelt. In school, Sonya was drawn to choirs and vocal ensembles as a place of refuge and became a part of anything she could musical. After high school, Sonya joined up with the Lindsey Wilson Singers, where she performed and traveled on tour.
After college, Sonyas music began to take its own direction. She went into a studio and recorded her own demo and the love for studio music began in her. Since then, shes recorded or been a part of over 100 recordings at nearly every studio in the region. Several of these recordings have been circulated around Nashville, and she continues to build alliances with friends shes created along the way.
Sonyas single greatest joy, however, is performing live in front of an audience, and her experience continues to grow in various settings and crowd types. She has performed in many types of settings, including coffeehouses (like the Paramount Arts Centers, the Rhythm Country and Blues Club), small private clubs (like The Bay Club, Music Depot, the Carter County Jamboree), festivals (like Cattletsburgs Labor Day Celebration, Ashlands Poages Landing Days, Flatwoods Red, White, & Blues Festival, Huntingtons Safe Trick or Treat), and even hosted her own show at the historic Paramount Arts Center featuring special guests Marty Raybon with Full Circle and Billy Dean.
Sonya also takes great joy in giving back to the community involving herself with help organizations to benefit others. Shes been involved with Pathways by performing at events to honor people for their civic work and helping kick off a campaign against domestic violence.
The work shes put forth is all worthwhile to her because she enjoys what she does and firmly believes that God gives us gifts to share with others, and to Sonya Crites, nothing is more fulfilling or brings more joy to her than sharing that very gift.
