"This is not about pants/
And this is not about shirts/
And this is definitely not about hair/
This is about a good time/
Maybe music isnt dead, maybe we just forgot what it sounded like." - George Pettit, ALEXISONFIRE

True words. But there is consolation. ALEXISONFIRE are not alone. Apart from very few other bands, the five Germans in SON are willing to take up the fight against obscurity. SON have come all the way from a German small town to put real, challenging music back to where it belongs: in the hearts and the minds of the people. Since 2003 Carsten Nutsch (vox), Mike Neldner (git), Heini Quiring (bass) and Chris Fröhlich (dr) have one clear objective: making music that is self-explanatory and defines itself through its very own sound.
Well, it's not like our lads came out of nowhere before the mission was christened SON. All five of them had been active in other bands. Names? Irrelevant. But while we're talking about names: whoever expects an elaborate story behind SON will eventually be disappointed. SON is merely short and to the point, lacks cliché and sets itself against the elaborate names of most of their peers. Which in itself wasn't part of the plan either. It just happened.
SON's self-titled EP first saw the light of day in early 2004. The six songs of the self-financed and self-produced debut were far more than is commonly understood when talking about a "demo". The EP garnered enthusiastic reviews, a track on one of Germany's most prestigious compilations and lots and lots of gigs throughout Germany, France and the UK. Apart from roughly 50 gigs (one in support of the amazing BIFFY CLYRO) 2005 was the year of the Emergenza Festival. SON came second in the area finals, decided that this was not enough and tried again. Not in vain! The second attempt saw SON win the area finals and play the big stage at the German Taubertal Festival 2006.
After that much live action SON holed themselves up in the studio to give birth to their first album proper. Recording was punctuated by gigs all over Europe. Highlights included Paris and London.
But there were more pressing matters. There was a full-length debut to be released. In 2008 SON unleashed their first album proper: "A Granular Scan". The album celebrates purest rock removed from lame labels and trends. Rock music that vividly remembers HELMET, that likes the early DEFTONES and that freely admits that FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND's Tales Don't Tell Themselves was an epiphany. SON play rock music that screams, that purrs, that kicks out in anger, that finds its home right under your skin and that deserves a closer look with each play. How convenient that "to get granular" means exactly that.
Reduced to a four piece after the departure of Achim in July 2008 SON have been holed up in their practise room to adjust their more complicated arrangements for a single guitar and to write new songs. 2009 is all about doing what SON do best: playing live. Another stint in the UK begins to surface on the horizon. And there are rumours of a new EP. Still getting granular. Stay tuned.
