SHREEFPUNK

BANDINFO:

"The introduction of a new kind of music must be avoided because it will endanger everything. For nowhere was musical style changed without unsettling the most fundamental political laws."

Plato, Republic 424c.

Shreefpunk is a Cologne band founded by Matthias Schriefl in 2003. Besides Schriefl, Shreefpunk consists of three young musicians. Johannes Behr, Jens Düppe and Robert Landfermann all live in Cologne like Schriefl himself and have been playing together for years.

In 2006 the first record "Shreefpunk plus Strings" appeared with ACT. It was followed by invitations to the most important festivals, and tours of Australia, West Africa, Europe and the whole Milky Way.

The second CD "Live in Köln" appeared 2009 with ACT. Alongside the young musicians on the new CD, there is a long-time star of the subversive scene, who has been both captivating and irritating his fans for decades: Django Bates.

Shreefpunk often works with a string quartet (Hannah Weirich, Nadine-Goussi Aguigah, Axel Porath und Thomas Schmitz). The string players -- all of them renowned freelancers in the New Music scene -- uncharacteristically make use of techniques borrowed from soul and folk music, they create improvised carpets of sound, even make up the rhythmic foundation in extended passages, and one can even hear them singing from time to time.

Many tunes feature Schriefl's multi-phonic playing, a distinguishing trait of the young trumpet player. His sound experiments also involve cow bells, children's toys and Brazilian pipes.
