Shane Cooley wasn't nervous when he recently headlined at Richmond's famous National Theatre. Instead, he couldn't have felt more at home. After all, he had worked ten years to get there. Although the massive stage has housed artists ranging from Elvis Costello to Lady Gaga, the unsigned folk-rock singer/songwriter walked out alone with his acoustic guitar, facing his audience in the same manner that he faces an impossible industry.

Shane doesn't have time to be nervous. In college, he earned his BA in English by juggling his music with papers about Medieval literature. Now, he devotes all his time to doing whatever it takes to get his music heard. Hailing from rural Virginia, the now 23-year-old has made a name for himself over the course of his decade long career, gaining a reputation of professionalism and being on top of his business. As a result, he has managed to turn some heads, touring both coasts of the United States and recently showcasing at South by Southwest. His performances have preceded headliners such as Bruce Hornsby, Carbon Leaf, and Lucinda Williams. He also performed on stage with the pop band Parachute.

When Shane isn't booking and promoting, he proves himself as worthy of an artist as he is a businessman. His plethora of full-length albums, EPs, and demos have received worldwide radio airplay on stations such as XM/Sirius and Radio Gets Wild. He feels compelled to stay true to the musical identity he has created, while still acknowledging his roots. His smart lyrics are befitting of an English major, and his music draws mostly from the classic rock and folk he has loved since his childhood. That being said, his music also possesses the hooks and radio-friendly brevity necessary to survive the 2000s.

Shane Cooley has no misconceptions about what it takes to be a savvy musician in the 21st Century, but also recognizes that nothing is more important than a solid live show. He never lets the bleak odds of the industry get in the way of the opportunity to share his music with an audience. Off stage, Shane works around the clock honing his skills and making connections. On stage, he remembers why he does. When you see him in concert, you are seeing him at his finest, because he knows he has earned it.

REVIEW OF "VAGABOND," SINGLE FROM THE NEW RELEASE, THE VAGABOND EP (on iTunes)
"Shane Cooley “Vagabond” – Genuine sounding. I felt like I was listening to a movie soundtrack for something from the late 60's…Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, sweet Baby James…Shane is in his own world in 2010 and writing music that is unique and refreshing to listen to.…this is cult following folky listening. "

Sam MacDonald Article on Shane at SXSW
Shane Cooley, a singer-songwriter and William and Mary student, was in Austin, Texas, over the weekend singing and circulating at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival.
Often described as spring break for the music industry, the 23-year-old SXSW has evolved into the largest gathering of unsigned rock and Americana talent in the nation.
Cooley didn't play the festival proper, but a satellite event put on by the USA Songwriting Competition. He was one of five performers picked to play the contest's showcase.
"It was a blast, a great time," said Cooley, who is on track to graduate from William and Mary this spring with an English degree. "I rubbed a lot of elbows, did a lot of networking. I had a great experience." It was his first visit to SXSW, but it won't be his last, he predicted. "Austin is so musician friendly. And there was such a large congregation of unsigned artists there. It was really refreshing to see."
Cruising the streets and clubs of Austin, Cooley ran into his friends in the band Red Wanting Blue from Columbus, Ohio, and spent some time with the Washington, D.C. group Honor By August.
"But I also saw bands just playing on the street that blew my mind," he said.

"Cooley isn’t some college kid that woke up last week and decided to sell his bong and buy a guitar so that he could impress his hipster buddies. He’s been writing songs since he was 13 years old and has applied much study as to what works and what is real in his life and ultimately, his music."
~John Pfeifer, Aquarian Weekly: New York/New Jersey

"The young performer who's had mentors that range from Hornsby to Virginia's Steve Bassett is eager to see the world with a guitar under one arm and a suitcase under the other.
At the risk of repeating myself from other junctures in the young Cooley's career, I wouldn't bet against him."
~Rob Hedelt, The FreeLance-Star

Shane Cooley: The Midnight Oil EP
Review by Jennifer Bradshaw, Metromix Jersey Shore

Cooley combines melodic indie rock with lazy country undertones, melded together with patchy production quality that gives this EP a sweet, homegrown sound. Cooley claims that the album was inspired by “Nightly walks in Williamsburg, Virginia.” I don’t know if I get lonely walks, but I do get a sense of the small things in life, and the joy of playing music for its own sake. If I was in a bar and Cooley was playing, I’d sit back and listen and probably enjoy myself. If he was playing on the radio, I’d probably leave the station on. And if he releases a full length album, hopefully, it captures the simplicity of this short EP.

From a Live Show Review for Magazine 33
By Will Murphy
"Shane is not a one-trick pony. He may not have much on stage with him besides an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, but he manages to keep all his songs quite different from one another. I think it's an achievement, as a performer, that he can get up there and have good enough control over his guitar work and over his voice that the audience can feel like they're in a smoke-filled beatnik barroom in one song and a gunfight in Mexico in the next."
